Dear Woodin Families
The winter season provides us with the special opportunity to give thanks for the many blessings that we have been provided. At Woodin, we are blessed beyond measure with students who warm our days with their smiles, enthusiasm and passion for learning. We are thankful for the parents, guardians, volunteers, and community supporters, who continually seek ways to enhance our school by giving of their time and talents in numerous areas, and for our teachers who give their very best daily to ensure that all our students reach their fullest potential. We really do have much to be thankful for. It takes a village. We are so proud of our Woodin community.
Over the holidays, I look forward to my time with my boys and our extended family. When we are together in person, one of the things we treasure is telling stories. These are treasured memories for our family. Did you know that sharing your family stories and traditions actually helps your child develop resilience? Resilience is the one of the traits we focus on here at Woodin. Researchers found that children who know a lot about their families do better when they are faced with challenges and tend to have better emotional health. Here is an interesting article about this topic. During the many personal and professional challenges I have faced during the pandemic, I found that I have often drawn on the resilience I knew from stories my mom has shared about her journey. Stories of her resilience have bolstered my own. The upcoming holidays remind me of the importance of continuing my family traditions and telling my children the stories of my family and my life growing up.
As you gather with friends and family over the holidays, what stories will you tell? What traditions did you grow up with that you are passing on to your children? What are the stories behind those traditions? During the pandemic, perhaps you now have new traditions that will become memories and stories your children will tell their children someday. What you share together about the history of your family will benefit your child with precious memories and also a stronger sense of family and personal resilience.
Warm wishes for a joyous holiday season with your family and friends!
In partnership,
Dawn Bowers
