Time to Give Thanks, and to Give Back

There are so many things to be thankful for here at Tustumena. We have an exceptional staff who care deeply about our students and their success. I enjoy walking into classrooms and seeing how high standards are blended with high levels of support. One thing that I never see is teachers giving up, even when it would be easier to just "give" the answers. I am very thankful for that.

We have some other events coming up that I want to make sure everyone knows about. First, our annual Food Drive has kicked off. Students can bring in canned or packaged food items (sorry, we cannot accept home-canned goods). Please have your child bring the food items to their home room each morning where the teachers will tally the items and report them to Ms. Gossett. Ms. Gossett will then keep a running total and update our graph in the main entryway of the school. On December 18th, the items will be picked up and sent to the Salvation Army where they will be distributed to families here on the Peninsula.

Next we have our Turkey Bingo night coming up on November 22, just in time for Thanksgiving. The fun starts at 6pm and there will be bingo games in the library for the kids too. Then we have our Cash Raffle night on December 6th. Somebody is going to walk away that night with $2500. Is it going to be you? There are a few tickets left if you want to improve your chances. Please contact Mrs. Mills or myself if you want to buy another ticket. There are only a total of 400 and when they are gone, they are gone.

Also on December 6th, we will be hosting the Star Lab and Science Discovery Festival. We have scheduled the entire afternoon with opportunities for our kids to spend time in a star lab and then to explore "space stations" in the gym. Be sure to ask your kids what they learned on that day!

We also have another concert coming up. Thursday, December 12th is our concert for students from Kindergarten through Third Grade. The concert starts at 6pm so please have the kids here by 5:45.

Our next Early Release day is November 20th. We will continue our work on adopting our new Science Standards. If you have any questions about what students will be learning in science next year, please feel free to explore the website: http://www.nextgenscience.org/search-standards-dci. You will find that it addresses all the learning objectives for every grade level. Our teachers will also be working on report cards and lesson planning on Friday, December 20th. That is the first day of Christmas vacation for the students, but I will be "the Grinch" and make the teachers stay here in order to be prepared to communicate well with you and prepare exceptional lessons for our students.

Thank you to all our Veterans!

Call for Volunteers for Turkey Bingo Night.

We need 2 more volunteers to organize the children playing Lynxo for books in the library from 6:00 to 7:00.

From our PTO

This year the PTO is sponsoring the new BoxTop store. In the store, the children will have the opportunity to buy school items (pencils, erasers, stickers, etc.) with BoxTops. In addition to the school supplies, we are collecting small toys. It would be a great opportunity to recycle slightly used toys or trinkets. Please bring small items to be recycled to the collection box by the Lost and Found (inside the parent room). The first BoxTop store will be November 26th and 27th (mornings only in the library).

Popcorn for Box Tops

The sixth grade class will be selling popcorn during recess on the following days:

Nov 21

Dec 5

Dec 12

We may continue after Christmas depending on how it goes during these sales

Cost: 5 box tops or $ .50
