Healthy Lunch and Snacks!
Hello From Mrs. Burke!
Just recently I was visiting with my kids about what they are eating for lunch and what snacks they are having before they go to their sports practices. My boys are 14 and are freshman in high school. They are healthy and good eaters so I was shocked when they told me that they have started buying a sugary "tea" product at school each day. These drinks are huge! With 2 servings in each can, they are consuming 40 grams of sugar with that one item. YUK! So, we looked up how much sugar they should be consuming in a day and made some changes to how they pack lunches and what snacks are available for them to take; lots more fresh fruits and veggies that are easy to grab and go! I thought you might also be interested in some of the information we found.
In a statement released in 2016, the American Heart Association recommended that children consume less than 25 grams of added sugars per day, which is equal to 6 teaspoons. The recommendation came from a study published in Circulation 2016, in which researchers analyzed current findings on cardiovascular health effects of added sugars on kids. They found a link between the sugars and heightened cardiovascular disease risk factors, including high blood pressure, diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity. Because few kids stay at or below 6 teaspoons of added sugars per day, they recommended making cutting back an important public health target.
Sugar and Health
Though small doses of sugar do provide your child with energy, it's important to provide nutritious sources of sugar. The sugars found in fruits, vegetables and dairy foods are natural, which means they should have a prominent spot in your child's healthy eating plan. What's dangerous to your child's health is added sugar, which is found in desserts, soda and baked goods, according to MayoClinic.com. White bread, white pasta and even condiments such as ketchup and barbecue sauce also contain added sugar. Too much added sugar can cause unhealthy weight gain, and it also makes your child more susceptible to tooth decay.

School Days Program
Save your home Northwestern Energy Propane receipts! For every gallon you purchase, the school will earn $.02. It doesn't seem like much, but it adds up quickly! We will place a receipt box in the office, all you have to do is bring your original receipts to school and drop them in the box.
Check with your neighbors that may use propane (they don't have to live in our district) and ask them to save their receipts, then you can collect them. Check with businesses in the area, too!
We can earn up to $2000 for our school. The students will have a choice in how the money is spent! Think about how this money can be spent with the money earned from the School Days program! It's like money in the "tank".
