MINISTER JOHN L. STEVENS
Stevens had assisted Sanford B. Dole and Thurston in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy. Also, he had worked alongside the Committee of Safety. In the process of Overthrowing Hawaii, the Committee of Safety took procedures to surround the ‘Iolani Palace, to enact the Coup D’état; a sudden and decisive action within the change of government, illegally or by force. Stevens not only received assistance from the Committee of Safety; but also from 300 marines that were ordered to defend himself and the committee. Queen Lili’uokalani was predicted to announce her new Constitution that she desired to enact, to give her more power over her own kingdom. Stevens, his force, and the Committee of Safety threatened her to surrender her throne to the outside surrounding forces and refuse against the announcement of the new constitution. If she had refused, war will break loose and blood will flood the streets of Hawai’i-and she did.
BENJAMIN HARRISON
Named as president during Kalakaua’s reign. During that reign, Harrison had created the 1876 Reciprocity Treaty; claiming the tax-free exportations of sugar to the U.S. The next year, Harrison had altered the treaty and demanded to allow the U.S. to claim Pearl Harbor, if they wanted the treaty to remain constant within the economy. As a result, Kalakaua had refused to surrender Pearl Harbor to the foreigners and claims it as a Hawaiian possession. Harrison refused to give up because they sought to use Pearl Harbor as a perfect location to establish forts. He went about his way and held Kalakaua at gunpoint, to sign the Reciprocity Treaty; which gave more power to the cabinet and surrenders Pearl Harbor. Within the senate body, Harrison introduces the Treaty of Annexation for Hawaii; but, President Cleveland attempts to withdraw the treaty and refuse to allow the process of annexation to occur.
PRESIDENT MCKINLEY
Another asset to the Overthrow of Hawaii. McKinley has worked alongside with Harrison and Thurston to Overthrow Hawaii. He had favored the process of annexation because he sought to allow Pearl Harbor to become an asset to his idea of “New Imperialism” (domination of all land). He exclaimed to use Pearl Harbor as a strategic location and an asset for the Spanish-American war. On July 7th, 1898, McKinley signed a petition that calls forth the annexation of Hawaii to the United States of America. But, overall, Hawaii isn't legally and lawfully a state of the unified country because there was no real treaty, it was a petition signed. As the McKinley statue stands within the High School grounds, located on O'ahu. It is a false monument that stands because McKinley holds a nonexisting treaty in his hands. From here on out, he and the Americans were able to overthrow the Hawaiian monarchy in 1898, but not lawfully unite it as a part of the whole.
