Weekly Tech Update 11/2 to 11/6

Clean Up Google Classroom, Zoom Upgrade

Cleaning Up Google Classroom

I am not sure if these first 10 weeks of school flew by, or dragged by, but I do know that it is time for a new marking period. As we start a nice, new, fresh marking period, there has been a lot of discussion about what to do with our Google Classroom from marking period 1. Hopefully, most of you are aware by now that the grade book in Google Classroom, and Google Classroom itself for that matter, does not allow us to archive assignments within a current Google Classroom. So if we wish to keep showing our students their current averages, which is a good strategy to use, we need to clean up our classroom.

I have collected and provided 4 different options for you to consider if you intend to clean up your Google Classroom. Each option has it's own pros and cons. Find the option that has the least amount of cons for you 🙂. There is a presentation in the tutorial section below as well as a clever way to export your grades into Sheets for documentation purposes.

Did You Upgrade Zoom in September?

Back on September 21st, Derek Lalonde from the MORIC sent us an email explaining how we can upgrade our school Zoom accounts to the paid licensed accounts. If you did not upgrade back in September, you can still upgrade, you will just need an active invite from Derek.

How can you tell if you have upgraded to the licensed account? There are multiple ways. First, if you click on your profile once you have logged into Zoom in the top right, it will say licensed. Secondly, when scheduling a meeting, you will notice that the URL starts with “https://moric-org.zoom.us….”. Thirdly, navigate to your personal meeting room and see if the URL for your personal meeting room starts with “https://moric-org.zoom.us”.

If you have any questions or have issues upgrading your account, please reach out to Lisa Blank (lblank@watertowncsd.org), Tara Elmer (telmer@watertowncsd.org), or myself (jstcroix@watertowncsd.org).

Keep Those Chromebooks Up To Date

If you notice a little number pop up in the lower right-hand corner of your Chromebook, it may mean that your Chromebook needs an update. The numbers inside the circle indicate that you have a notification for your Chromebook. Click on the number and see if you have a “Chrome OS” notification as pictured. You should always click on the “Restart to Update” notification to keep your Chromebook updated. This can alleviate several small issues of why your Chromebook may not be performing as expected.

Assignment Boards for Students

Check out Rebecca Wright and the high school Living Environment teachers as they demonstrate how they use assignment boards for their students. It is a great way to give the student a one-stop shopping experience. It also sounds like her students enjoy it as well. Seriously, how often do our students reach out to us looking for their work? Check out the video of Rebecca and you will see what I am talking about!

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

Looking for free interactive templates, choice boards, weekly planners, or fresh presentation themes? Head over to SlidesMania and check out the collection of templates for education that Paula has created. They are free to use. Created by EDU for EDU!

From the I learned the hard way department, pay attention when you download a template. Sometimes it will go to your personal Google account and not your school account. It isn't a big deal, just share it with your school account and make a copy in your school account.

Go Soap Box

There is nothing better than when leaders model and demonstrate what it means to be a life-long learner, just as our mission statement reads at WCSD!

Mrs. LaBarr recently used and learned about this platform called Go Soap Box and asked us to share it with you. Go Soap Box is a web-based platform that allows students to ask questions, contribute to a group discussion, take quizzes, participate in polls, and more. It's easy to get everyone involved, the students enjoy it, (In Mrs. LaBarr's case, the superintendents enjoyed it), and it's an easy way to implement formative assessment into your lessons.

Cisco IP Phone System

I do not know when the new phone systems will be activated, but I wanted to include the instructions that were sent out via email recently. Just in case you deleted the email or can't find it, you can access the directions and quick start guides here.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first month! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged
