8.L.1.1 & 8.L.1.2 Standards
8.L.1.1 Summarize the basic characteristics of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites relating to the spread, treatment and prevention of disease.
8.L.1.2 Explain the difference between epidemic and pandemic as it relates to the spread, treatment and prevention of disease.
What Is Microbiology?
Microbiology Is The Study Of Microscopic Organisms, Such As Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, And Parasites. It Allows The Common Person To Cure Deadly Diseases, And Save Thousands Of Lives.
Disease Vocabulary
Microorganism ;
Microbe ;
Pathogen ;
Eukaryotic ;
Prokaryotic ;
Deadly Viruses
Viruses Are The Only Non-Living Of The Four Pathogens; They Are Small, And Are Disease Producing Particles; Unable To Reproduce Without A Host Cell. The Virus Enters Through Any Openings In Your Body, Attaches To A Host Cell, And Begins To Reproduce On The Cell, Making More And More Virus. When The Host Cell Has Too Much Virus Attached To It, It Bursts, Causing The Virus To Spread Throughout Your Body, And Make You Sick. Viruses Are Prevented With Vaccinations, Washing Your Hands, Sneezing Into A Tissue, Or Arm, And If You Stay Home With Any Sign That You Are Sick. Some Examples Of Viruses, And The Vaccinations To Prevent Them: Influenza; Flu Shot, Chicken Pox; Varicella.
Bad Bacteria
The Bacteria Are Living Organisms, Too Small To Be Seen By The Bare Eye. They Are Made Up Of A Single Cell, Making Them Single Celled Organisms. They Live Freely In Soil, Water, And Living Things. Bacteria Produce Rapidly With Binary Fission. Bacteria Are Prokaryotic, Meaning That They Lack A True Nucleus And Other Organelles. They Can Live With, And Without Oxygen, And In Extreme Conditions. Bacteria Is Transmitted In Mostly Moist Areas, By The Cough, Sneeze, And Infected Surfaces. Bacterial Disease Is Prevented With Antibiotics, Washing Your Hangs, Cleaning After Raw Meat Touches The Table, And Don't Cough Or Sneeze Around Others. Some Examples Of Bacteria, And The Antibiotics To Prevent Them: Salmonella; Fluoroquinolones/cephalosporins, Strep Throat; Amoxicillin.
Freaky Fungi
Fungi Are Living Organisms That Live By Decomposing The Organic Material In Which They Grow. They Are Eukaryotic, Meaning They Have A True Nucleus, And All The Necessary Organisms To Survive. Fungi can be found in soil, on plants, trees, and other vegetation, and on our skin. They are slightly larger than bacteria. Fungi spread using agents such as wind, water, or animals through its spore's tiny reproductive cells. Some Examples Of Fungi, And The Medicines To Cure Them: Ringworm; Sporanox, Athletes Foot; Xolegel.
Pack Of Parasites
Parasites are living organisms that derive nutrients from other organisms, often causing harm in the process. Because parasites are living organisms, they can generally move on their own. Sometimes, Parasites Are Also Called Vectors. To Avoid Parasites, You Should Wear gloves when doing gardening or working in soil and sand, And Keep fingernails clean and short, avoid biting nails. Some Examples Of Parasites, And Cures To Get Rid Of Them: Toxocariasis; Antiparasitic Drugs.
Outbreak, Pandemic, Epidemic!?
Outbreak - Occurrence Of A Disease Greater Than Would Otherwise Be Expected At A Particular Time And Place.
Smallest Spread Of Disease
Epidemic - An Outbreak Of Disease That Affects Many People In An Area.
Larger Than An Outbreak
Pandemic - An Epidemic That Spreads Over A Very Large Area Or Throughout The Entire World.
Largest Spread Of Disease
