IN THE NEWS
In the Spring of 2017 Dr. Beck worked with six undergraduate research assistants in her lab (Laila Alshami, Melissa M. de la Luz, Andrea N. Camacho de Anda, Heather J. Kendall, Elizabeth S. Rosati & Margaret C. Rowe) to develop, draft, submit and publish an article in a peer reviewed journal. The idea for the article first came from a 2016 documentary by Lisa Ling concerning victims who were ordered to parent their children conceived during their rape with their rapist. Dr. Beck conducts research in family court and knew that this issue had not been raised in the academic or professional literature and felt it was important to bring it to the awareness of the family courts. The students worked in groups on different sections of the paper, prepared a power point presentation for a research lab meeting. The presentation was then presented as a poster at the Graduate and Professional Student Research Showcase and eventually was submitted to a peer-reviewed journal and published in 2019.
