News from Ms. Hess
This week we finished setting up many of our learning notebooks. The composition notebooks you so lovingly provided will become the storehouse of all the amazing work your child will do this school year.
In math, we learned three different computation games to encourage flexible mathematical thinking with engaging practice. Your child learned to access IXL online to practice at school and at home. We also spent time starting our math workshop where students received extra practice for subtraction or extension through a game called Close to 1000.
We also worked on many group problem-solving tasks. In Science, we worked to save Samantha - ask your child how they solved this sticky problem!
Please see your child's Friday Folder for an orange sheet with their login and password information for the math website IXL. Occasionally, I may have kids write in an IXL item that reinforces our work in math for practice at home.
Next week, we will start word study, our math curriculum (Go Math), and our first literacy unit. Have a wonderful long weekend!
Binder of Awesome!!!
This binder will be used as a way to update you on your child's progress and will be sent home on a monthly basis on the last Friday of each month.
Your child will have an orange reading log to help us set reading goals and is expected to transfer their reading data from their planner to this log each morning. Our goal is to help build our reader's awareness of their reading life in order to set goals and grow this school year. Eventually, your child's data binder will include samples from literacy, math, and writing.
Please sign and send back on Monday. If your child shares two homes, please feel free to contact me if you'd like to keep the binder longer in order for both families to view the binder.
Learning Goals This Week:
Math: I can work with partners to play math games practicing using numerous operations.
Science: I can make, record, and communicate my observations.
