St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 4 - Term 3 (Thursday 15 August 2019)
Dear Parents and members of our school community
Prayer for the Assumption of Mary
Father in heaven,
all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom
she who bore the Christ in her womb
was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
An Explanation of the feast of the Assumption for Children - 15th August 2019
On the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (to use the fancy name for this day), we remember when Mary was taken (“assumed”) into heaven, body and soul, after she died. You will not find this story in the Bible. However, a tradition handed down from the earliest days of the Church says that Mary died in Jerusalem and was buried in a tomb. But when the apostles opened the tomb again, her body was gone. Why would God take Mary’s body and soul into heaven? In part because Mary is special to God: she said “yes” to becoming the mother of Jesus. But God also wanted to show us that one day, all of us will share in the bodily resurrection of Jesus. Mary is the first person in the Church to experience the resurrection in its fullness.
First Holy Communion
This weekend our Year Four students along with other Parish children, will be receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion during the following masses: Saturday 6.00pm, Sunday 10.00am. We wish these students well and pray that they will be united in a special way with Jesus when they receive Holy Communion for the first time.
I congratulate parents who, as the first educators in their children’s faith, have the wonderful responsibility of preparing their children and supporting their growth and participation in the wider Catholic community.
Important Message regarding Traffic Warden Management
The Traffic Warden who works at the Children’s Crossing on Rockingham Road near Troode Street is unable to work tomorrow (morning and afternoon) and for the duration of next week. Unfortunately there are no relief staff to cover the position at this time. Please take appropriate action. Traffic Warden Management cannot cover this absence with police.
They will endeavour to provide a relief as soon as possible, however they cannot guarantee it.
Please be very vigilant whilst crossing without a warden.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Plastic Bottle Tops Collection
Envision Hands – Collection of Plastic Bottle Tops
Thank you for the many bottle tops dropped into the school for Envision Hands.
To assist in the Envision Hands Project please help by ensuring only clean bottle tops from soft drink, water and milk bottles are the only tops recycled. The plastic ring can be recycled too! Although Envision does try to recycle any plastic it receives, at present their operations can’t fully process these other items.
This is an ongoing project and your tops are happily accepted by dropping them into the box in the front office.
Thank you!

Speak Up Awards
Monica T, Sophie O and Taylor T represented St Jerome's at the Speak Up Awards. The girls did an amazing job last Friday but alas no preliminary finals. I must say, I think Sophie O must have been very close to a place because her speech seemed on par with the three winners. The winners were from North Beach Primary and Anne Hammersley Primary School. The three girls thoroughly enjoyed it though and that’s what it’s all about!

Robocup
Our Year 6 Extension students competed in the Robocup showcase last Friday the 9th August, which was held at Curtin University. The 4 teams entered the “On-stage” category, which is a performance to music. The children built and programmed their robots to a theme, which this year were Jurassic World, Mickey Mouse, Shrek and Minecraft. 3 of our teams then made it through to the State Final which was held on the Saturday. Mrs Paatsch was extremely proud of all of the students that participated.

The Great Vegie Crunch
St Jerome's will be participating in the Great Vegie Crunch at assembly on Friday September 13.
Parents, could you make sure on this day that each child brings a hard piece of fruit or vege (must make a crunch noise when bitten into) to bring to assembly so that we can participate as a whole school.
2019 League Tag
The CPSSA League Tag carnival was held at Santich Park on Tuesday August 13.
20 players from St Jerome’s were involved. The teams were mixed consisting of an A and B division.
The day started as a beautiful sunny day, however, as soon as the first game of the day started, so did the rain. We all got absolutely drenched, except for Mr Tucker who was well organised with his umbrella.
Luckily the rain did not hang around for very long and the sun returned to dry us all off.
Both divisions put in an amazing effort all day and all the students should be proud of their game play.
B Division ended up finishing the day in 3rd place and A division finished in 8th place.
Well done to all students involved. Thank you to Mr Tucker for coaching on the day and thank you also to any parents/caregivers that came to watch and cheer for the children.
