A Local and Global Commitment

Penn's School of Social Policy is committed to making an impact in the immediate West Philadelphia neighborhood, Philadelphia region, the United States, and throughout the world. Our vision, "the passionate pursuit of social innovation, impact, and justice" is the cornerstone of our five programs.

Field education is an integral part of the Master of Social Work (MSW) program. MSW students spend three full days in field placement each week. Each semester, students spend over one hundred thousand hours in the local community.

The students in the Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership (NPL) and Master of Science in Social Policy (MSSP) programs spend time learning how to shape social policy. While the MSSP program focuses on policy at the government level, the NPL focuses on policies of non-profit organizations. Both programs provide students with internships and shadowing opportunities, allowing them to gain excellent hands-on experience in their chosen sector.

SP2 encourages students to engage on a global level and even allows students to earn coursework abroad. Students complete international internships, formal exchange programs, and independent studies abroad. SP2 regularly partners with colleagues in India, Korea, and China to expand the global social work network. Additionally, SP2 welcomes students from all over the world in all five of the academic programs.

Student Spotlight

A student at the University of Pennsylvania wants to make sure future generations understand historic struggles for equality, so that similar mistakes don’t happen again. Carolyn DeChants is earning her Master’s in Social Policy degree from Penn’s School of Social Policy & Practice. For nearly a year, the 26-year-old Ann Arbor, Mich., native has been working on a digital archive with the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center at Penn. “The LGBT Center has played an enormous role in the lives of countless students, faculty, staff and alumni here throughout its 30-year history,” DeChants explains. “We wanted to create something that would be meaningful and useful to all of those people, whether a nostalgic alum or a researcher.”
