Upcoming Parent Workshop

Made for This: Building Resilient Students With Intentionality
By: Demontea Thompson M.Ed.
Researchers, practitioners, and lawmakers have been working to improve the educational outcomes of young people of color for quite some time. Improvements thus far have come from centering the voices of young people as we work toward a better system. This workshop will stretch the minds of parents by engaging them in a discussion-based presentation. Participants will be able to learn tools and tricks to understand their children and obtain new perspectives about navigating educational institutions. While examining race throughout this presentation, participants will be introduced to new and creative ways to discuss oppression and equity with their children and communities. There will be recommendations shared, and all participants will be able to ask questions.
Demontea Thompson is a Compton-native and the Executive Director of Together We Inspire – a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that improves current and former foster youth educational and career outcomes. He is also a Ph.D. student at UCLA in the School of Education, Urban Schooling Division. His research explores how educational institutions can facilitate success for young boys and men of color, particularly those who have had interactions with the child welfare and justice system.
Demontea is a slam poet and author of the inspirational autobiography, Raised From Scratch. As a TEDx Talk speaker and featured guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show for his community work, he focuses on putting research into practice. He received his master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California (USC) and his undergraduate degree in business management from Cal State Northridge (CSUN). He is a board member of the CSUN Alumni Association.
We hope you will join us for this amazing parent workshop opportunity!

Attendance Awareness
The key to success is a proactive, positive, data-driven, problem-solving approach.
- Although chronic absence has been waived as a reportable accountability measure during this crisis, existing chronic absence data, collected before schools closed, and other metrics of involvement in remote learning, can be important assets in assessing where help may be needed.
- During remote learning, employ multiple measures (e.g. prior chronic absence, contact, connectivity, relationships and participation) to monitor whether extra support and enrichment is needed to ensure academic success.
- Families, educators and community partners need to monitor which and how many students are missing too much school and which populations of students and families are most affected.
Kindergarten Update
Kindergarten 2020/2021 school year is off to a great start! The students have shown great potential and willingness to be successful during distance learning.
So far, Kindergarten has been able to log into our daily virtual learning as well as Seesaw and Lexia! We have reviewed all 26 letters and are starting our weekly focus letter. We are becoming experts at reading sight words, segmenting and blending words. We are working on rhyming words and syllables. We are also learning weekly vocabulary words and discussing weekly topics.
We can count 0-10 using fingers and writing numbers on whiteboards. We can also count up to 10 objects and use tally marks to show numbers 1-10. We are also showing one more or one less on a number line and with our fingers.
We have practiced using Jamboard, muting and unmuting ourselves, and raising our hands to answer and show our learning. We are working in our ELA and Math workbooks and our resource folders. We are learning to show WAVE and are following expectations daily. We are developing social-emotional learning using Second Step and our Dog and Snail puppet friends! We are also enjoying doing music, art and P.E.!
Counselor Connection
Attendance is an important part of our learning system. As long as the teacher is teaching everyday the student should be learning right along with them. As the school counselor I work hard to also motivate and celebrate our students' successes. Every Monday I will be joining every elementary classroom to present the “Proud Mariner Perfect Attendance Student of the Week” award. Even in this time of distance learning we see students are able to join their classes everyday from anywhere in their home.
An example of the extraordinary way distance learning has made it possible for students to attend from anywhere is our very own 3rd grader Brianna Herrera Guzman. She was on vacation with her parents and still was present to learn every day of that week that she was away from home. We celebrate her success as the recipient of the perfect attendance student of the week in Mrs. Ramos class. Keep up the hard work kiddos.
