Becoming A Freshman

English 9

Hi, my name is Jake Merkel and I will be talking to you about being a freshman and what to expect. English this year is pretty fun because you have a great teacher, along with the fun activities and projects. Doing book talks are fun, because she makes you feel comfortable and relaxed while you explain your book. It is not a huge step from English 8 to English 9.

Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is an exciting novel for people who love adventure. It is a fun read because we got to read them on the kindles and watch the movie at the end. We also did fun activities while reading such as games with your district to compete for many things. It was a fun experience and I enjoyed reading the book and doing the activities in class.

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet was a very fun story to read. It was hard to understand at times because it was written by Shakespeare. It was not that bad to understand after you get used to it. The story was amazing and made you want to keep reading to see what happens next. We also did some activities during class that I enjoyed.

This was an awesome book because it relates to teenagers and it is a good book about a kid who gets in trouble and goes to court. You see the story from the narrators prospective, and his prospective throughout the book. This was also a great book to read because it was interesting to hear that he was actually scared, and he said he was innocent. I kept asking the question to myself is he guilty? Is he innocent? Is he lying to get out of prison?

The Odyssey

The Odyssey was an easier story to understand than the and Juliet language and vocabulary, and it was one I liked better because he is a hero and gets back home. This was literally epic because of all of the troubles that Odysseus encounters on his way back home to Ithaca after the Trojan war. You will be surprised to see how Odysseus handles his situations and controls his men on the journey. It also includes gods and goddesses that help Odysseus, and hurt him.

Independent Reading / Book Talks

It is very important to stay ahead on reading your book so you can get it done early and do your book talk. Her class makes reading fun, and she gives you class time to read your book too. And make sure you read your book fully so you can fully describe the book to her when you are talking. I can not tell you how important it is for you to stay ahead on your reading so you get a good grade.

My Fave

My favorite was when we read Monster by Walter Dean Myers. It was my favorite because it kept me reading and wanting more. It kept me on the edge of my seat because I had to set an opinion on what I thought about him. When you read it you will also need to see If you believe him, or the other woman going against his case.

My not so fave

My not so favorite thing this year was probably the short stories. One because they were too short, and two, because they were childish. They were not that interesting as a long epic that we read. Also, the in class work we had to do for it was not too fun to do. All in all, I would say short stories are not one of my favorites.

My advice

My advice to you would be to keep your binder organized. If you are not organized all the time, you will get behind and have to cram in work to fix your binder. Also, I did not put the papers in where they were supposed to every day and put them to the side. You also need to keep the papers so you don't lose any for a grade. I say to be organized and neat, and to keep up with your work.
