Principal's Post - A Weekly Note From Mr. Ortman
Dear Mill Creek Families,
The students and staff of Mill Creek Elementary School extend to you an invitation to attend our Halloween Parade to be held Wednesday morning, October 31, 2018. This is a fun time for the children, teachers, parents, and friends!
Our Halloween Parade will begin at 9:15 AM. Parents will be able to observe the parade in the front of the building. Youngsters will come out the Red Door and loop around the bus parking area before returning to class. Our goal is to have our Trick-Or-Treaters see and be seen by all students and guests.
Additional parking will be available on the rear playground and front grassy area. In spite of these additional 200 parking spots, parking will be a great challenge. Carpooling is encouraged!! In the event of inclement weather, we will conduct the parade in the building for the student body.
Schedule
Wednesday, October 31, 2018
AM Kindergarten and Grades 1 through 6
• Preparation for parade: 8:45 AM to 9:15 AM
• Parade time: 9:15 AM – Parade Ends: 10:15 AM
• PM Kindergarten Parade – 1:15PM; Parties – 1:30 to 2:30PM
• Grades 1-6 room parties will begin at 1:45 PM and end by 2:45 PM (Adult party attendance limited to pre-arranged parent chaperones.)
All parties must conclude by 2:45 PM to clear the bus lanes and driveways of all guest parking. Dismissal begins at 3:15 PM.
Parents are asked to select costumes that do not reflect violent themes. All weapons such as pirate swords or muskets are to be avoided.
Parents wishing to take their children home immediately following the party should inform the classroom teacher by note. Unfortunately, it is not feasible to safely dismiss large numbers of students via the intercom system. Thank you for your understanding.
In closing, we would like to wish you a happy and safe Halloween Season.
Enjoy the weekend!
Sincerely,
Shawn M. Ortman
Principal

Mill Creek Behavior Notices and Conduct Cards
Our goal at Mill Creek is to provide all students with a safe and respectful learning environment. In order to support that goal, we use positive reinforcement to recognize students who are following the CREEKERS’ Code.
We also have a consequence system, Mill Creek Behavior Notices and Conduct Cards, for students who make choices not consistent with the CREEKERS’ Code. Behavior Notices will be used as a warning system and an opportunity for student reflection. After two behavior notices, a student will receive a conduct card for the next offense.
The consequences for receiving a conduct card are:
- 1st time: Referral to the office and discussion of behavior with Mr. Ortman and/or Mrs. Adelman. Phone call home from the office.
- 2nd time: Loss of Privilege AND Parent meeting with Mr. Ortman and/or Mrs. Adelman. At the meeting we will discuss an individualized plan.
We recognize that all students make mistakes, and we want them to learn from those mistakes. We use these opportunities to discuss your child’s behavior with them and create a goal for the future.
We appreciate your understanding and support!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amy Adelman
Assistant Principal
Southside Fest at CB South - October 12th
Southside Fest is a time for CB South clubs and organizations to shine and show what South has to offer to our students and the community. Various clubs will have games, foods, and challenges that will help to engage the younger kids and build up their Southside spirit leading up to their years in high school. We also will be having a meet and greet with the marching band, cheerleaders, and football team before the big homecoming game. There will be food trucks and beverages sold, with music and dancing.
The event will run from 5-7 in the back courtyard at South, and families are encouraged to stay for the homecoming football game where our CB South Titans will take on our rival CB East.
Information from the School Nurse
I would like to welcome you back to another school year. Please take a few moments to review some important information listed below:
Physical and dental exams—
The State of Pennsylvania requires students in certain grades to have health exams.
- Students entering Grade 3--Dental Exam
- Students entering Grade 6-- Physical Exam
- Students entering Kindergarten and all students new to the district-- Dental and Physical Exam. The dental and physical forms can be found at http://www.cbsd.org/Page/904 .
The completed health forms are due no later than October 15, 2018. Please keep a copy of the health form for your records.
Students may not attend field trips unless these forms are completed.
Emergency contact information— Complete the emergency form on line on the parent portal. Please be sure all information is current. Inform the school office of any changes in phone numbers (home, work, cell) so we can contact you in the event that your child becomes ill or injured while at school.
Medication: All medication to be administered to students, whether prescription or over-the-counter, must be kept in the health office. Medication must be sent to school in the original labeled container and must be accompanied by a Medication Dispensing Form signed by the physician (or dentist) and the parent. This form can be downloaded from the CBSD website (www.cbsd.org).
Change in health status: Please notify the nurse if your child has a change in their health status during the school year (surgeries, fractures, and sprains, along with any family or emotional issues that arise). The more information we have concerning your child, the more we can adequately attend to their needs during the school day.
Food allergies—Please alert the school nurse and your child’s teacher if your child has any food allergies. Food is often part of classroom activities and it is important for the teachers to be aware of any concerns.
Contagious illnesses: If your child develops any contagious illness (strep throat, pink eye, lice, fifth disease, chicken pox etc), please notify the nurse’s office. A temperature of 100.4F or greater is considered to be a fever and your child will be sent home from school. Children should be fever free for 24 hours (without Tylenol or Ibuprofen) before they return to school. If your child is sent home sick from school with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, they are not permitted to return to school the next day.
Please encourage your children to get plenty of rest and to eat a good breakfast before coming to school each day. Well rested and well fed children will be ready and eager to learn.
