At this event, Dr. Roy will present some ideas of Aldo Leopold and Pope Francis regarding nature, community and a sense of belonging. The American naturalist and philosopher Leopold is best known as the author of A Sand County Almanac and Sketches Here and There (first published in1949). In this book, Leopold articulated an innovative idea known as the "land ethic," a new way of thinking and acting toward the land. Briefly, the "land ethic" simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: "the land." Pope Francis issued an eagerly awaited encyclical letter in 2015: the Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home. Pope Francis has stated that concern for the natural world is no longer "optional" but is an integral part of the Catholic Church's teaching on social justice.
