We are gearing up for some fun things around JLD! Operation adopt a beanie baby is in full swing. Ask your student what their personal goal is. Everyone is working towards something and the kiddos are really excited about it. Slushee day on wednesday! Get those orders in as monday is the cut off. PTO has launched a fundraiser. Please see below. ("Donut" ask me how I feel about the $200 incentive. ) They are also working on care-share, organizing class parties, and prepping for Santa Store. Stay tuned for important info in the days to come. Let's have a great week and hopefully some nice weather.

Important Facts To Know...

  • 175 Indigenous languages are spoken by Native Americans and Alaskan Natives.
  • The Cherokee tribe is the largest identified tribe in the US.
  • In 2020, 9.1 million Americans identified as American Indian on the census.
  • There are 574 tribes recognized in the United States.
  • American Indian Day started in the early 1800s.
  • Native American Heritage Day has evolved to a month.
  • Indigenous People's Day is October 11th. This replaces Columbus day as Columbus did NOT discover the Americas.
  • Native Americans were forcibly relocated in the 1800s. This included the Trail of Tears which displaced 60,000 Native Americans from 1830-1850.
  • Approximately 4,000 Native Americans died during the Trail of Tears march.
  • American Indians were granted US citizenship in the 1920s.
