CARLSBAD UNIFIED CONNECTIONS
May 19, 2023
Superintendent's Message:
In November 2018, voters approved Measure HH, Carlsbad Unified’s $265 million bond initiative to modernize classrooms, science labs, and instructional technology – enabling our students to learn in safe and state-of-the-art facilities. I am pleased to update our community on the progress we have made in renovating and improving our school facilities with Measure HH funds. Jefferson Elementary offers two good examples of successful Measure HH projects: the Culinary Lab and the Innovation Lab. Construction has wound up, new appliances are up and running in the cooking stations, new furniture is in place, and students are working and learning in their new spaces. Jefferson Elementary is entering its fourth year as a California Green Ribbon School, growing vegetables and fruit – and even raising chickens – in a sustainable environment. Now it does so in a Culinary Lab facility that reduces its environmental impact by saving water and power and by efficient recycling. The school can now take its next step, bringing the harvests from its gardens into the kitchen, where students can study the science of cooking and nutrition. The new state-of-the-art lab will now encourage tomorrow’s cooks, nutritionists, and chefs. Measure HH Phase 1 Projects In Phase 1 we undertook campus-wide renovations at Magnolia, Hope, and Kelly Elementary Schools – some of our oldest schools – and more targeted improvements at the Science Building and the chiller plant at Carlsbad High School. Further, we created innovative STEAM labs/Makerspaces at Magnolia, Hope, Kelly, Poinsettia, and Pacific Rim Elementary Schools. Students are now studying and collaborating in these beautiful new facilities. Since campus security and safety are of the highest importance, our Phase 1 plans prioritized fencing, security cameras, and office screening systems. And, because we are committed to energy efficiency and sustainability, we built solar parking structures and battery storage modules at several campuses, as well as water efficiency systems districtwide. Measure HH Phase 2A Projects The design stage of our Phase 2A projects is now underway. Contracts are being awarded and summer projects are being planned. Campus-wide or targeted renovations are planned for Aviara Oaks, Buena Vista, and Jefferson Elementary Schools and for Valley Middle School. STEAM labs are being designed for Aviara Oaks, Buena Vista, and Calavera Hills Elementary Schools and for Valley Middle School. Also as mentioned above, Jefferson’s Culinary Arts and Innovation Labs have already opened for students. Further Phase 2A projects – such as storm water and grading work, lunch shelters, playgrounds, and blacktop – are being completed at Hope and Kelly Schools. Measure HH Phase 2B Projects Up next, in Phase 2B, we will begin design work on campus-wide and/or targeted renovations at Aviara Oaks Middle School, Carlsbad Village Academy, Pacific Rim Elementary School, and the Cultural Arts Center. And we will add a new STEAM lab at Aviara Oaks Middle School. I want to express my appreciation to our supportive community, the Independent Oversight Committee, the district staff, the construction teams, and the staff at the schools as we modernize our campuses for the next generation of CUSD students. These school facilities improvements make it possible for Carlsbad Unified to provide every student an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment.
