From the Principal
Hello, and I hope that all is well with you and your families. As I walk the halls and visit classrooms, I am reminded about how lucky I am to be serving as principal at Banks Trail Middle School. Our students are doing an outstanding job, both in and out of the classroom. On a regular basis, we have students representing Banks Trail at a very high level. Our band, chorus and drama have provided us with some awesome performances. Our sports teams are enjoying the success that is earned through hard work. Just in this last month alone, our students have been involved in raising over $1,500.00 for the BTMS Angel Tree. We have collected over 1600 pounds of food and non-perishable items to help with a food drive for our community. Academically, we saw 85 students become Junior Beta Club members and as I went through report cards last week, I saw how students' effort translated into higher grades. Just a side note, BTMS also can boast the Fort Mill School District Spelling Bee Champion and the Runner Up. This short snapshot of the last two months reminds me that we have amazing our students and teachers. Thank you for teaching, supporting, and helping to instill these traits in your children.
We are the Champions!
Go ahead parents sing the song with me, you know you heard that famous song in your head. On a more serious note, we are extremely proud of students who represented BTMS with flying colors at the Fort Mill School District Spelling Bee.
The following students represent our school:
6th grade: Sophie M., Olivia K., Caleb M.
7th grade: Sara Kate E. , Will S., and Brice M.
8th grade: RJ D., Alexis S., and Michael T.
The District Wide Spelling Bee was held on January 7th where nearly 40 students competed against each other. We are proud to announce that Banks Trail's very own Michael T. was a District Runner-Up and Alexis S. was the 2015-16 Fort Mill School District Champion. Alexis will now go to Charlotte to compete in the regional competition. We are very proud of Alexis, Michael and all of our BTMS spelling Bee students.
8th grade Students and Parents - It is IGP Time
Included with your student’s report card that went home on January 6th, is information about our upcoming Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) meetings. These parent meetings are mandated by the state for every Rising 9th Grader. On February 23rd and 24th we will be conducting over 260 IGP meetings with parents. Please make arrangements to be available on your appointment day and time. The meetings will take approximately 20 minutes. Please review the letter for more information.
Also, throughout the week of January 18th I will be meeting with all 8th graders to give them a High school Program of Studies book, and a 9th Grade Course Request Sheet. Instructions on how to complete this sheet will also be sent home. Course Request Sheets must signed by a parent, and returned to school by February 1st.
Thanks for your attention to these important items as we prepare to transition your student to high school!
Learning in the Classroom
In schools today, many people hear the phrase engaged learners. I started to wonder if our parents know what we mean by engaged learning or if it was just another word that educators tend to use and never really explain. Engaged learning is the process in which students actively participate in their learning. The amazing teachers at BTMS were asked to submit pictures that show their students engaged. Below is just a small sampling of what was received.
January Terrific Timberwolves and Leaders of the Pack

January Teacher of the Month
Ms. McGinnis is a dynamic teacher who puts a lot of time into her science classes, our Academic Challenge, and Science Olympiad Teams. Most of this work is not seen by other teachers, but those in her hall notice her hard work and commitment. Ms. McGinnis also works hard to make sure her students understand what is being taught. She is definitely deserving of Teacher of the Month.
