Oceanside High School Weekly Update

Hello Pirates!

The month of January has come and as crazy as it seems it is almost gone. Second semester always goes by faster than we remember. Please make sure that you are staying on top of your academics-especially for our seniors because June 15th will be here faster than you know!

Here at Oceanside we are continuing to improve our practices to make sure we provide the best possible Pirate Experience for all of our students, community and staff. We are actively preparing for the 4x4 block schedule for the 2023-2024 school year, we have newly adopted curriculum in many of our courses, and our staff are continually developing their best practices for their classrooms. Please let us know if there is anything that you feel that we can improve.

Please remember that it is all of us together that make OHS what it is for all of our students. We welcome you to be an active participant in the activities and happenings on campus. If you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to reach out to any OHS staff member! We are a team working toward a common goal. Only when we all work together can we truly transform and increase the success of all of our OHS students!

Pirates you are a part of something big! You belong and will always belong in the Oceanside High School Pirate Community. What an amazing feeling to realize you belong to something bigger than the individual Pirate, but rather part of a 100 year plus Pirate Ship Community!

Regardless of where you may go and no matter what you end up accomplishing the one thing that you have to count on is that you will ALWAYS be a PIRATE!

As of now 54% of our graduating seniors have submitted their Financial Aid Applications! Remember the deadline to submit is March 2nd!

We will be giving transcript grades on March 29th and June 15th.

Girls Water Polo bullies Canyon Crest

While water polo looks like a complicated game from the pool deck, there is a simple formula for success that so difficult to find.

If a coach can find a couple capable scorers and a quality goalie to go along with some grinders who are willing to be physical at the offensive and defensive ends of the pool, then success usually follows.

And that's what first-year coach and OHS alum Lucy Gates has concocted with the Oceanside girls water polo team as it chases its first-ever league championship.

On Tuesday at the William A. Wagner Aquatic Center, the Pirates' formula was too much for Canyon Crest in a 12-6 Avocado League victory.

Amy Fritz and Maggie McMahon each scored four goals and Malia Hanns added three more as OHS raced out to a 9-4 halftime lead and never looked back. Allison Hyde finished out the scoring and goalie Haley Garcia made 15 saves in the win and was in total control of the defense.

Herrera selects Adams State

Adams State called and Daniel Herrea answered, and the result is the senior will continue with his football career.

Herrera, a three-year starter along the offensive line for the Pirates, has accepted a scholarship offer from Adams State, a Division 2 school in Alamosa Colorado.

The Grizzlies, under head coach Jarrell Harrison, finished 2-9 last season and play in the competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The DEI team is inviting parents, guardians and caregivers to attend an upcoming series of Community Listening Circles. We will be holding four in the coming weeks, each designed for a specific community.

The nonprofit Oceanside High School Foundation was originally founded in 1986. Left inactive after the Oceanside High School 90th reunion, this vital organization was re-established in 2005 to organize the school’s centennial celebration. Today, the Oceanside High School Foundation continues to serve the students, staff and alumni of OHS. Working on behalf of Oceanside High School, the Foundation helps provide funds for student programs, scholarships, faculty grant awards, campus improvement projects, the annual All-Class Reunion, Hall of Fame and other activities helping to lessen the disparity between student’s needs and state/district funding. We also serve as a liaison and database for alumni and their respective classes.

OHS Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO)

A great way to support OHS is to join or renew your membership in the OHS PTSO. We are a volunteer-run organization that supports the entire OHS community through fundraising, volunteering and communication. We support parents, students, faculty and staff, and all families and staff are welcome to join. Your donations and the funds we raise go toward staff appreciation events, teacher & club grants, AP test scholarships, student events & recognition (e.g., senior signs) and more.
