Welcome (Back) to VTHS!

Greetings, VTHS!

We are very excited to welcome you back to school on Tuesday, September 7th as we begin the 2021-2022 school year!

As mentioned in previous messages, Ms. Colte is our new assistant principal and is responsible for our freshmen and sophomores this year. Although we will be "sharing" Mr. Demsak with Rolling Hills School until early November, he will make every effort to begin his days at VTHS and hopes to be here to greet you each morning! Until November, Ms. Colte and Dr. Anderson will be sharing the responsibilities associated with the juniors and seniors.

We would like to welcome the Class of 2025 and the numerous students who have transferred into Vernon Township High School over the summer. We are also eager to welcome (back) our sophomores and juniors--and the Class of 2022--our senior class!

Our faculty and staff members have been diligently preparing all summer to ensure that our students will have an excellent school year. Although we strongly encourage you to reach out directly to your child's teacher(s) with issues pertaining to instruction, please be assured that we remain committed to every students' educational experience and encourage you to reach out to any of us if we may be of assistance throughout the school year.

This year, we want to encourage students to develop a sense of belonging while in attendance at Vernon Township High School; we want get involved in their school and not just attend school. These four years will provide important developmental milestones and we will be encouraging every student to participate in an extracurricular activity during the Unit Lunch period and/or after school. We are pleased to announce that the 3:30 pm afterschool buses will be available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons beginning on Tuesday, September 14th. A list of extracurricular activities will be shared with all of our students and is available on the district website.

We hope to see all of you--in-person this year--on Wednesday evening, September 8th. Please see the link below for the schedule of the evening, which will begin at 6:30 pm that night.

Wishing you all the best for '21-'22,

Pauline F. Anderson, Danielle Colte and Nicholas M. Demsak

September 11, 2021

Big picture
On September 11, 2021, we remember the tragic events that changed the lives of so many twenty years ago. We will be sharing information with our students during the first week of school, as this year's anniversary falls on a Saturday. Please reach out to us if your family needs any extra support during this time.

Please take a moment...

...to read the Back-to-School correspondence from Ms. Karen D'Avino, which clearly outlines the restrictions required as we begin the new school year.

Please remember the following important matters:

  • Face masks are required for all faculty and staff members, visitors and students while inside the school building.
  • Please self-screen all students before they come to school each day.
  • Frequent handwashing and the use of hand sanitizer will be strongly encouraged.
  • Close contacts will still need to be quarantined for 10 or 14 days, depending upon the CALI index scores for our region.
  • Fully vaccinated persons need not quarantine.

Thank you for your attention to the aforementioned matters. Updates will be disseminated as necessary throughout the school year.

Please note that breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge to all students for the remainder of the year. Use MyMealtime.com to deposit funds into your child's meal account for the Al La Carte and Al La Carte Beverage items. Thank you.

Although this was shared in other messages, we wanted to be sure you received it again for easy access.

Please use this link to view the VTHS Student/Parent/Guardian Handbook throughout the school year.

VTHS Dress Code

As we begin the new school year, it is expected that the students of Vernon Township High School will exercise good judgment, taste, and discretion in determining what to wear to school. Freshman Orientation 2021

Freshman Academy Orientation a Great Success!

On August 27, 2021, VTHS Freshman Academy welcomed the class of 2025!

Members of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Student Council greeted the incoming freshmen as they departed their busses. Each student received a class t-shirt representing their teams and imprinted with the VTHS Freshman Academy motto, ROCK (Respect, Ownership, Character, Kindness).

The orientation began with an introduction assembly, followed by a student-led tour of the high school campus. Many faculty members took part in the tour to introduce themselves and the wide array of courses and clubs available at VTHS. After the tour, students were given an opportunity to “test drive” their schedules in order to familiarize themselves with the path they will walk each day from homeroom to lockers to navigating the halls of VTHS. The orientation culminated with a lunch provided by the school for the class of 2025.

Although the day was shorted due to the excessive heat and the threat of rain, the majority of the members of the Class of 2025 took advantage of the opportunity to visit VTHS and we were delighted to welcome them to the high school! Many thanks to all of the teachers who worked behind-the-scenes to ensure that the students enjoyed their day--and to our student volunteers!

All eligible juniors and seniors will be permitted to park on campus if they complete and/or provide all of the necessary Parking Registration materials listed below, including Random Drug Screening and attendance at the Share the Keys presentation. All eligible drivers are welcome to begin driving to school beginning the first day of school, but must begin the process of registering their vehicles so they can receive a parking pass for the 2021-2022 school year.

In conjunction with the Vernon Township Police Department and the Vernon Township Board of Education, we are proud to continue our Safe Driving Initiative for the 2021-2022 school year. Student safety continues to be a priority to us at Vernon Township High School; therefore, we will be offering the Share the Keys program to Vernon families virtually this year.

Nearly 100 students and their parents/guardians attended the virtual Share the Keys presentation offered last month.

There are two more in-person Share the Keys presentations available for our student drivers and their parents/guardians on Wednesday, September 8 (prior to Back-to-School Night), which will begin at 5:00 pm and Thursday, September 30 at 7:00pm.

Student safety is of our utmost concern and students driving on campus poses potential hazards to our students, staff, and visitors. We feel having you attend this program with your child will help instill a sense of importance and responsibility that comes with sitting behind the wheel, whether driving to campus or anywhere else.

Each eligible driver must present the following information in order to obtain a parking decal to be permitted to park on campus:

  • A completed PARKING REGISTRATION form (see below)
  • A COPY of a valid DRIVER'S LICENSE
  • A COPY of the CURRENT REGISTRATION for the car
  • A signed copy of the RANDOM DRUG TEST form (see below)
  • Proof of participation in the SHARE THE KEYS' Program (see letter below)

If your child would prefer to pick up hard copies of the Parking Registration and Random Drug Test Form, please have them stop by the main office.

Student drivers should gather all information and return the completed forms to the main office. Mrs. Linda Hopper will be there to answer all questions and assist our student drivers!

Longchamp - iHeart Radio's Teacher of the Month!

Thanks to Ruby Sipila, a recent VTHS graduate, Ms. Marianne Longchamp was selected as iHeart Radio's Teacher of the Month for July 2021! Feeling "humbled and overwhelmed," this well-deserving educator visited the radio station (which houses WSUS, WNNJ and Max 106), where she was interviewed, received gifts, a tour of the radio station, and a beautiful framed certificate.

Congratulations to one of VTHS's finest teachers and many thanks to Ruby Sipila, who took the time to nominate Ms. Longchamp! We are proud to work alongside such a gifted teacher!
