Growth of Japanese Culture
Japanese Forms of Buddhism- Summary by Devin Brownstein
Buddhism Spreads in Japan
Buddhism spread rapidly in Japan with the support of Prince Shotoku. Buddhism blended well with Shinto (meaning way of the gods) because they have similar beliefs. They developed different sects of Buddhism. Many people, to this day, are Buddhists.
Zen Buddhism
Around 1100, Zen (meaning meditation) became more and more popular in Japan. Zen was very simple. It mostly focussed on inner peace. Samurai favored it because the inner peace helped them in battle.
