Hello October!

Middle School East

Message from Principal Kelly

Dear Middle School East Families,

Thank you for attending the Open House Events this fall to kick off the 2021-22 school year! 90% of our East families attended which is outstanding!! As a staff, we continue to work hard to seek opportunities to leverage the learning the past 18 months have taught us. We appreciate your ongoing partnership and feedback and have a short survey that we ask you complete below.

As we enter into the 2021-22 school year, we are extremely grateful to have students within our school! While we knew to expect delays in students learning and social/emotional development, the realities of the lack of consistency for our kids has resulted in greater than anticipated gap of "how to play school." NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) recently shared this article with school leaders. Please take time to read this article and visit with your child(ren) about the things that we would normally expect them to know, understand and remember.

It is important to reiterate the significance of being kind, being fair and following reasonable requests at school. As a staff, we continue to engage in conversations about clarity in expectations, reviewing norms and reiterating the why to ensure that students are knowing and understanding things that typically they would be much more proficient at and independent with. One of the most challenging parts of adolescence is the increased level of independence without the cause and effect portion of their brain being fully developed. Here in lies the criticalness to supporting their growth and development in thinking for themselves. Talking through decisions, pointing out the positive and negative consequences related to situations and helping them to gain others perspectives are not only powerful developmentally, but critical for their personal decision making success!

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in ensuring that your children have a successful middle level learning experience. We truly enjoy working with them and your family!

Dress Code

Last week, Mr. Holler sent this message to MSE families outlining the STMA middle school dress code policy. Thank you to our families who have supported this policy by having meaningful conversations with your children about appropriate dress. We have seen an even greater percentage of students following the dress code this week. We appreciate your partnership in addressing this important issue with your children.

Bus Safety

Each school year, we review with students how to ensure that they are safely transported to and from school each day. Students are reminded to remain seated, facing forward and that school expectations regarding behavior include their ride to and from school and at the bus stop. We remind students that riding the bus is a privilege not a right and that we need their help and good decision making to ensure the safety and well being of all students. Students take a bus safety test and practice emergency procedures for exiting the bus. Thank you to our students, teachers, staff at Don's Bus Company and families for working together to ensure our community remains safe for students and drivers!

A huge shout out to Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Hary for starting our first ever after school kickball club!! It has been absolutely fantastic to see students of all ages and abilities participate in a pickup game of kickball after school! We've LOVED seeing parents, siblings and grandparents join in the fun of watching these games! Kickball Club runs Tuesdays and Thursdays through October 14th!
