Happy Pi Day (a little late)

This past Thursday our 7th grade teachers (and all our math teachers) celebrated Pi day with some great mathematical activities. The students were able to explore how the ratio between a circle's circumference and it's diameter always equals the same number: 3.14. This is a great way for kids to explore this concept as they head into a unit on the area and perimeter of circles. If you are unfamiliar with Pi, or how long it goes on, ask your seventh grader how many digits past the decimal they have memorized. A couple students recited over 12 to me yesterday! I did mention to the math teachers that the only thing missing was some actual Pie to help us stay motivated for all the activities!

Next week we officially head into MCAS season. We work very hard to find that balance of having students do their best on the test while not getting over stressed. We are able to have all students take the test at the same time which reduces our total testing days to six - leaving us more time for learning! Next Tuesday, we will be doing the infrastructure trial where we test the system. It gives students the opportunity to re-familiarize themselves with the online system while we test to make sure all the tech stuff works. It usually takes about an hour to minimize disruption.

I am looking forward to some warmer weather and getting our students back outside during lunchtime - fingers crossed!

Paperless Progress Reports

We are trying to reduce paper use at CMS and have decided not to print and send home progress reports (we will still print report cards). Your child's progress report will be available starting today until March 29th on the Aspen Portal. To locate your child's progress report follow these steps:

Log into the Aspen Portal, the progress report will be located on the right side of the screen under the label "Published reports". Click on it and it should appear.

If you would like a paper copy of the progress report please call the main office and we can print and send one home with your child.

Nurses Corner

This coming week, the nurses and physical education teachers will be conducting postural screens on all sixth and seventh grade students who are in spring Wellness classes, as required by Massachusetts state law. This will take place during your child's regularly scheduled Wellness class and we will respect your child's privacy at all times. A letter was sent home by ConnectEd in the fall to all parents. If you have any questions or concerns, or would like another copy of the letter, please contact us at 781-440-5926 or . Thank you.

Washington DC Updates

With only 82 days until we leave preparation are starting to heat up!

Within the next few weeks the grade 8 teachers will pass out rooming forms for students to select their roommates. If you think your child will need help with this process please reach out to their homeroom teacher, Ms. McCaffrey (guidance), or myself. We are happy to help make sure everyone ends up where they are comfortable.

On Thursday, March 28th we will have a mandatory parent meeting from 6:30-7:30. We will go over packing, fill out forms, and departure details. Students are welcome to attend this meeting as well.

Within the next couple of weeks we will also send out an online order form for DC T-shirts. We ask that all students purchase one for the trip. You can purchase one as well Mom and Dad - it's super cool!

Please note that final payments are due March 15th please contact EF directly if you have questions. If you have been assessed any overdue balances please call EF, most of these charges can be waived. If you are on a payment plan EF will complete your payments on that schedule.

New Library Reading Area Fundraiser

The PTO is sponsoring a school wide request for funds to create a comfortable reading area in our school library. We will be adding a space with sift chairs, cozy benches, a rug, and other items to entice reading! We have already had a seed donation from Big Y Supermarket for $3500 to get us started! The $13, 000.00 would allow us to make over an entire section of the library for students use. Below is the link to make a donation - feel free to share it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the like! CMS is working to make our library the place to be!
