Compromise of 1850

Land was gained from the Mexican-american war. It was also considering the laws of California becoming a free state . But that would upset the balance. Utah & New Mexico became states. They made the fugitive slave law more stricter.

Fugitive Slave law.

The fugitive slave act was part of the compromise of 1850. They added this law to make the South happy. It was where the slaves were known as property. If you saw a slave and you didn't report it you would have up to 6 months in jail.

It was a anti slavery novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. She was against slavery. Writing this book was spreading the news about how bad slavery was.This is basically hows she got her support.

Kansas-Nebraska Act

The person behind the Kansas-Nebraska Act was Stephen Douglas. A plan that would divide the rest of the Louisiana purchase into the 2 territory. The 2 territories were Kansas & Nebraska. It would leave people with the question about slavery. With the new act the Missouri compromise act line would go away. And now they would have vote if they were going to bed Slave or Free states.

Bleeding Kansas

Bleeding Kansas was very violent. It involved anti-slavery and free states. They had their own little civil war with Nebraska. Kansas had become the battleground.

Dred Scott Decision

The Dred Scott Decision was a decision where the court had to decide if Dred Scott should be free or not. Dred Scott's owner took him where you couldn’t have slaves. But slaves were known as property not people. When you move you take your property with you, and that is exactly what he did.

John Browns on Harpers Ferry

John Brown wanted to start a slave rebellion, however it didn’t work so well. He tried to raid Harpers Ferry to gain weapons for him small army, But it didn’t help him because he got caught. His slaves didn’t join him like he had wished to happen. He got charged with murder and Several other crimes. He was said to be guilty, and John Brown was sentenced to be hung.

Election of 1860

The united states presidential election of 1860. It was the united states presidential election.The northern & Southern could not agree upon a candidate. Northerners chose Senator Stephen Douglas. Southern Democrats wanted the vice president John C. Breckenridge to be the president.

The border states joined the new government. The union became divided. The border slave states happened to remain with the union. South Carolina threatened separation from the congress.

The Cival war

I don't think the civil war could be avoided because all the bad stuff that was happening. As in slaves being taken away out of the territory and being with their owners in in the free states. And the killings that were happening. The civil war was likely to happen because people were fighting, & arguing.
