Standard Based Grading

Starting this year GPS will be implementing Standard Based grading for all Kindergarten-6th grade. Families are familiar with Standard based grades in K-3. However, this will now be shifted for 4th-6th grade students. We have attached a Family Guide to Report Cards along with a video that will hopefully help answer your question.

Reminder - Please Complete the 2022/23 Annual Update

It is extremely important that all GPS families complete the online 'Annual Update' in Infinite Campus every year. Even if your information has not changed you must still complete the 2022/23 Annual Update so we can ensure we have the most accurate information for your student in the case of an emergency. The information you provide is used by the district and your school to directly communicate with you regarding your student, or in the event of an emergency on campus. Please log into your Infinite Campus Parent Portal and complete the 'Annual Update' today!

From the Health Office:

Hearing and Vision Screenings

The Who, Why, and When

Identifying students who may be having issues with their hearing or vision is extremely important in order to ensure they are able to learn and develop appropriately. We often don’t realize a child is having difficulty with hearing or vision because they themselves don’t realize there is an issue, or they have learned to compensate.

Grades PS, KG, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades will be receiving hearing screenings along with all students on an IEP as well as students new to GPS. Vision screenings will be conducted on the same population minus 1st grade. Additional screenings can be done at the request of parents, teachers, or our school psychologist.

Carol Rae is currently scheduled to do mass screenings on Thursday October 20th. Some students will be screened prior to this date or after this date for various reasons. We use two methods to screen hearing which include the Pure Tone and the OAE. The Pure Tone involves the student raising their hand or clapping when they hear the presented sound. We test at 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, and 4000 Hz. The other method used to screen hearing is the OAE, which simply involves placing a small, soft probe in the outer ear canal and sends a sound out and receives it back. The choice of method used depends on various factors such as age of the child, ability to follow directions, and availability of equipment.

Vision will be screened using the Sloan Chart (letter chart), LEA chart (shapes), or the SPOT machine, which takes a picture of the eye and looks at the eye measurements. As with hearing, the method used to screen vision will depend on various factors.

If a student is referred for hearing they will be re-screened after 10-30 days. A referral will only be sent to parents if the student does not pass the hearing screening for a second time. Vision referrals can be sent immediately. Notices will only be mailed if a student is referred, no notice will be sent if the student passes. However, you are welcome to contact me at any time if you have questions on your child’s results.

Please note that the screenings conducted at school are done to identify students who need further follow-up, these results are NOT diagnostic. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.
