Abilities Awareness Week Oct. 12 to Oct. 16th
Thanks to our special educators for planning this weeks event. Susan, Karras, Katie, Kara, Dawn, Lisa O., Teri, Hilda and Viyan you are greatly appreciated for your daily support, knowledge and caring ways.
A few inclusion points from Teri O...
What does research say about the extended benefits of inclusion?
- The additional support that a child with an IEP receives spills over to all the children in the inclusive classroom. Having additionally trained staff members enables all children in an inclusive classroom to benefit.
- Most data concludes that achievement test scores rose, students were more engaged in their learning, were more self-directed, and felt a greater responsibility for their studies. All children progress both academically and socially.
- Students with IEPs feel like all other children in the class, having a true sense of belonging. They no longer feel stigmatized as being different. This allows students to have a greater sense of self or self esteem.
"Because everybody brings something to the classroom and that gets to come into the big exchange. And I think from that pool of abilities and differences, everybody gets to learn." ~Margo Pensavalle, USC Rossier School of Education.
