We finished up Unit 7 - Fractions and Decimals as Numbers
Unit Outcomes:
Students will recognize and generate equivalent fractions
Students will compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators.
Students will add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators.
Students will solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions.
Students will express a fraction with a denominator of 10 as an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100.
Students will make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions.
Students will understand a fraction as a multiple of a unit fraction.
Students will compare decimals and write in decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100.
We have started Unit 8 - Measurement and Geometry
Unit Outcomes:
- Students will recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint; and understand concepts of angle measurement: An angle is measured with reference to a circle with its center at the common endpoint of the rays, by considering the fraction of the circular arc between the points where the two rays intersect the circle. An angle that turns through 1/360 of a circle is called a “one-degree angle,” and can be used to measure angles. (MD.C.5a)
- Students will recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint; and understand concepts of angle measurement: An angle that turns through n one-degree angles is said to have an angle measure of n degrees. (MD.C.5b)
- Students will measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor. Sketch angles of specified measures. (MD.C.6)
- Students will recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non-overlapping parts, the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on the diagram in real world and mathematical problems, eg., by using an equation with a symbol for the unknown angle measure. (MD.C.7)
- Students will draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures. (G.A.1)
- Students will classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. (G.A.2) (Unit 8)
- Students will recognize a line of symmetry for two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. (G.A.3)
Math Facts
Has your child shown mastery of any math facts yet? How many levels has your child completed? Has (s)he earned the addition or subtraction triangle for the class quilt?
Get those math facts moving- make flash cards, download an app, play a math fact car game - students who know their math facts can concentrate more on math concepts and problem solving. Make a goal and work toward achieving that goal regarding math facts.
Language Arts
We are reading short informational text. Some objectives we will be focusing on are:
Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.
Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.
Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text.
Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
Identify the reasons and evidence a speaker provides to support particular points.
Somebody (the main character)
Wanted (the character's goal or wants)
But (the challenge that gets in the way)
So (the character's action to overcome the challenge)
Then (the results of the action)
Parents: You can help improve your child's comprehension by having a conversation about the independent book your child is reading each night for homework.
Social Studies
We are moving forward to learn about the American Revolutionary War. Students will be researching an important person or event from that time period. This will be the focus for their writing unit this quarter - informational writing involving researching and writing chapters about an historical event.
Newsela
Give it a try - it's a great way to maintain their reading strategies when they are home sick or on a snow day/delay as well as the weekend.
Ten Marks / Common Core
Has your child accessed his/her account lately?
This is another great way to maintain your child's math skills when home sick or on a snow day/delay or the weekend.
Parents can also create a parent account in order to be able to see how their child is doing. Ask you child's teacher if you need more information regarding how to create the parent account.
CLASSROOM NEEDS
As you know flu and cold season is here and we are in NEED of TISSUES and DISINFECTANT WIPES.
All classrooms are in need of PENCILS.
All students should have earbuds or headphones for daily use in class. Also, these will be needed for state testing which is in the near future.
