Ngā kōrero o te tumuaki tuarua
The month of August started off with hiss and a roar with a girls and boys volleyball team participating in the WRISSA volleyball tournament at the ASB stadium in Kilbirnie on Tuesday, August 2. This tournament is always well fought out and this year the boys were the overall winners and the girls came third. Congratulations to Wini Valakvi-Jellie and Luke Jonas for being players of the day.
I was also very fortunate and grateful for the opportunity to attend the 100 year Centenary of Intermediate Schools in Taupō last week. We had some very inspiring key note speakers, one of which was an Australian clinical psychologist, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. He spoke about the negative impact that social media and cellphones are having on our young people and that he was instrumental in getting the government to ban them from schools in every state, except Queensland. The prefrontal cortex of the brain changes dramatically during the adolescent years so we need to take into account when dealing with our students, their (some, not all) inability to make positive and informed decisions regarding their actions and controlling their emotions.
Our young ākonga are 20% of the population, but 100% our future.
Last night was the finals of the Wairarapa Primary Schools netball competition. MIS Kaha and MIS Manawa featured in final of their grades, however, both unsuccessful in their feat.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents who volunteer their time to coach, manage and/or assist all of our sports teams. Without you, we would not be able to have these opportunities on offer for our students.
With the recent sunshine appearing, I do hope that spring is just around the corner and is not leading us into a false sense of security!

Introducing two of our board members....
Liz Polley
I have 4 children who attend Wairarapa College, Masterton Intermediate School and Douglas Park School. I work as a regional lecturer for Open Polytechnic where I support learners to successfully complete their Early Childhood Degree. A school board member plays an important role and is entrusted by the community to ensure the success of the school. I see this as a great opportunity to use my skills and experience to give back to the school community, helping guide the school’s direction. MIS needs people who are passionate about education and during my time on the board I have enjoyed working with a great team of committed people who want the best for our students at MIS. I want to continue to help balance the commitment and opportunities for the school and community and believe it is important that where you can help you do. It has been rewarding knowing we are ensuring effective teaching for all our students through informed governance, and I would enjoy the opportunity to continue in this role.
Ayla Yule
My name is Ayla and I am proud to call Masterton my home after moving here with my daughter and husband in 2020.
I currently work in tertiary education as a Student Mentor. I am passionate about learner engagement and success, particularly for second chance learners. In my work I am fortunate to be able to develop new ways to engage with learners to positively impact their success.
It is a privilege to represent you and your children as a Board member at MIS”.

Monrad Intermediate rugby exchange - by Gus Monk
When I got to school I could tell everyone was nervous and excited because they knew that we were going to Monrad Intermediate to play some big boys! When we got on the bus we started singing which made us less nervous. It was heaps of fun. We started to have a competition of who could sing the loudest or the best and that's when Mr T joined in as well. Mr B was sitting at the front of the bus very focused on the game ahead so he left the singing upto Mr T. I don't think Mr B's singing would have beat Mr T’s.
When we got off the bus we were greeted by some students and a pōwhiri that welcomed us all to their school. Once we got into Monrad’s hall they sang most of their school songs.
It was then time that we faced the giants!! As we ran out on the field we did the haka and we all had did pukana!
The first whistle blew, the game started, they kicked off to us and they scored the first try within 5 minutes. We were shocked it was now time for us to put our games faces on!!!
Mr B’s face looked angry, so we all knew it was time for us to step up and play hard!!
In the second half we knew we needed 23 points to win the trophy so then we smashed them with lots of tries and came out with the win!!! We won 69-17 and gave MIS a +14 points differential win over both games.
The man of the match was then named as……………Angus Monk and that's me.
As a team we would like to thanks Mr T, Mr O and Mr B for taking us to Monrad intermediate
Matharapa - 2022 - by Manaia Hanson
Matharapa is an annual maths competition that is held in the Wairarapa College hall. It is an amazing thing to experience because of what you end up doing if you are so privileged to go to it.
The first thing that the year 7s do is they sort out their teams if they haven't yet already. When the teams are sorted out you sit at your designated table ready for the competition to start. There are 3 categories to this competition. The first one is a round to yourself where you solve questions without the help of your teammates. Round 2 is a round WITH your teammates where you solve questions with each other to see how many you can get right. Round 3 is another round with your teammates but this time, you are given a whole lot of puzzles to figure out! Everyone gets a small prize for participating which usually includes a chocolate fish! If you are lucky enough to come in the top 5, you get an even cooler prize! If you get the opportunity to try for the Matharapa, I definitely recommend that you give it a go because it is awesome!
Foodbank Mufti Day - by Elaine Johnston
On Friday, week 3 we had a mufti day and a fundraiser for the Masterton Food Fank. The whole school had a competition of which class would bring the most non-perishable food. A Lot of classes were committed, but at the end of the day room 7 won with a total of 80 cans and received a $100 voucher for the class. Room 15 was a close second.
As most of you may know, MIS and their whānau love to give back to the community and we can all feel proud that we have contributed 638 items to the food bank this year! Ka mau te wehi!

We have a special Arts Enrichment class coming up where we will be making jewellery. If you have any old beads or necklaces, bracelets etc at home that we could pull apart we would love to have a great variety of beads to choose from to go along with those we will buy. Please send them to the Digitech space if you have any broken jewellery at home that we could repurpose.

Saturday football report - by Zeb Wheeler
Before the Saturday squad started, we had to have a trial so they could see who is good enough to be in the team or not, but everybody who trialled got in the team. Our first game was at Douglas Park and thats where they announced the captain and vice captain. The captain was Zeb Wheeler and the vice captain was Virgil Richardson. Our practices were on a Thursday after school and games were on a Saturday morning, often at the early time of 9am!
We played 14 games lost 6 won 7 and drew 1.
We have our prize giving on the 1st on September after school in Room 18.
I'd like to thank Mr Johnston, Mr Randall and Mr Stauber for their coaching and managing of the team over the season.

Taupō Trip
All the kids that got picked met at school to prepare the van on Sunday morning. Once we got nice and comfortable we got on our way. At around 12 o'clock we stopped into the Flat Hills cafe for lunch. It was yum there and fun because there was a bouncy castle and a maze. After lunch, we travelled for another 2 hours until we got to the Taupō DeBretts Resort, which was pretty amazing! Once we settled in, us kids went to the big bounce pillow pad and had heaps of fun. After that we went into town and did the hole in one golf shot on the lake. Luke was probably the closest out of all of us. After our fish and chips at the park, before we went to the hot pools, we all had to iron our uniforms ready for tomorrow.
We started off the second day by having some breakfast, then got ready for the day. We got into our uniforms and blazers, hopped into the van, then went to the venue of the pōwhiri and conference. We were all feeling a little bit nervous because it was a pretty big deal performing for all of the Intermediate principals in New Zealand. After the pōwhiri, we made our way to Huka falls. The hookah falls was a really great experience for all us kids because we got to learn about it for how deep it was and how much pressure it had in it. After huka falls, we stopped into the Huka honey hive and then carried on to Taupō Intermediate. Spending time with the Taupō Intermediate kids was one of the highlights of the trip. Our afternoon and evening consisted of the AC baths, mini golf, pizza for dinner and more time at the hot pools! Except this time we got to go on the slides as well. There were two different slides a black one and a blue one they both were the same length as each other and you could race down them with another friend if you wanted. During our debrief of the day and trip, we talked about how lucky we were to have been chosen. We performed the haka for Mr T the following morning to say thank you.
