November 2019
Greetings Seahawk Families,
We are nearing the end of our three-year journey with construction at AHS! We look forward to having our band, choir, and CTE students back on campus and out of the rainy weather experienced during their daily commute to AMS. Our students have done an outstanding job navigating the ups and downs of an active construction project and for this I am extremely appreciative.
Our fall sports season is winding down and winter coaches are starting to prepare for another season of Seahawk Swim/Dive, Wrestling, Cheerleading, and Basketball. Winter sports start on Monday, November 18. Please ensure that you and your student athlete have completed the online registration process via Final Forms no later than Friday, November 15 and that you have paid all associated fees. Contact Carey South in our Athletics office if you have questions.

Changes to Graduation Requirements in Effect Starting with the Class of 2020
In the 2019 session, the Washington State Legislature made significant changes to high school graduation requirements, beginning with the Class of 2020. Most of these changes relate to how students are allowed to demonstrate they are ready for the next steps after high school. Through the graduating Class of 2019, students were required to pass state assessments or meet one of the state approved assessment alternatives to be eligible for a high school diploma.
These alternatives included:
Established scores on college admissions tests, Advanced Placement exams, or International Baccalaureate exams.
Comparison of a student’s grade point average in two credits of English and/or Math with the grade point average of students who took those same courses and passed the state test in English Language Arts and/or Math.
Earn college credit in a dual credit course in English Language Arts or Mathematics.
With the passage of House Bill 1599, these alternatives to the state tests have been expanded to include:
High school transition courses in English Language Arts and math
Sequence of career and technical education (CTE) courses, including completing a Core Plus branded program
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
Note: With the passing of House Bill 1599 students are not required to pass the Washington Comprehensive Science Assessment (WCAS) to graduate. Juniors are required to participate in WCAS testing to satisfy state and federal accountability requirements.
The State Board of Education is currently working to adopt rules for each of these pathways and other changes in the law to provide additional clarity. Once these rules are adopted, we will inform students and families.

ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is one of the most widely used, multiple-aptitude tests in the world, developed and maintained by the Department of Defense. The test measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military and the general workforce. Please see Mrs. Woodards in the Counseling Center if you would like more information.
SAT or ACT Testing
Most four year colleges require applicants to submit scores from either the SAT of the ACT. Four year college-bound students are encouraged to take it more than once. This will give students a chance to use the higher of the test scores. Colleges in WA State will accept either the SAT or the ACT. For
out-of-state schools, please check the Admissions page for the college(s) you are interested in attending to verify their admissions test requirements. AHS is a testing site for the SAT on 11/02/19 and 06/06/20.
