Zsuzsi Gartner
Zsuzsi Gartner's two most famous collections of short stories are All the Anxious Girls on Earth and Better Living Through Plastic Explosives. They both have an audience of young girls.
"Anxious Objects" is about a family of three that doesn't have a lot of money and are struggling to make ends meet. Although they don't have a lot of money they try to live in a way that is comfortable to them. The only wish the little girl has is to get pajamas. The parents don't let their lack of money get in the way and get her pajamas because she is a smart little girl that does nothing wrong. The tone of this short story is hopeful because they are always hoping the economy will get better and the husband will make more money. The theme is money doesn't make everyone happy. People just want to fit in. I think this is a good lesson because the families that don't have as much money as other families are usually closer together. On the other hand, rich families don't usually have a lot of family time, therefore not as close. Some of the things said in this story has to do with the area in Winnipeg, such as the languages spoken in Canada, the way some words are spelt, and some of the universities.
