I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
Poet- Maya Angelou/ Reporter- Emily Paul
Why I did the poem
I did this poem because it was extremely powerful and takes you on a journey to what life was for the slaves. The way she words it is beautiful and melodic. Maya used birds to describe how she felt interally, giving the reader a perspective insight on the slaves feelings and hers.
Caged Bird Sings Of Freedom
The bird in the cage represents the depressed emotions of the slaves. In the last stanza of the poem " The caged bird sings with fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom." Is where I got the idea to add the colorful bird. I imagined a bird coming to the caged bird to free him. Hence the cage and chains around him. When it said "his tune is heard on a distant hill", thats where the colorful bird comes into play. The caged bird's call is heard. The colorful bird represents freedom and hope. The bird is colorful so it can bring light and color into the caged bird's world of darkness and despair.

These words are powerful and tell the strong emotions in the poem. How she felt during that time period, the rage, how fearful she was, and how she still longed for freedom even though it was unknown.

Maya Angelou
This is very important in the poem because it tells you how much she longs for freedom and how it came to her. She wanted freedom even though she didn't know what came with it, just to finally be free.
My Theme
My theme is a representation of a colorful bird that represents freedom to come to her. This page (or at least what I am trying to do) is give hope to the reader that she did find freedom and hope after the poem, and that she didn't suffer longer.
Poetic Device
Mine does common rhythm. She will not rhyme all of the time, but she does use a rhythm to it.
