Character Traits, Comparing and Contrasting, and Legends
This week our theme has been on apples. We read various versions of Johnny Appleseed and wrote down some character traits of his. We compared and contrasted versions of the stories about him, focusing on how legends can change over time.
Sequencing and Opinions
This week we made our own apple sauce, taking care to write down the directions using sequencing words. At the end of the week, we did some apple taste testing and wrote our opinion about which apple we liked the best.
Fraction Math
We are learning about fractions in math. We cut open apples into even parts and discussed what the words numerator and denominator mean. We learned what parts of a whole mean and how to read fractions.
Apple Experiments
Since we learned about the life cycle of an apple tree, we conducted an apple experiment. We noticed how the apple would turn brown right away after being cut open. Since no one really cares for brown apples, we asked ourselves, "what can we put the apples in to stop them from turning brown?" We tried water, vinegar, oil, lemon juice, and nothing. We charted our predictions for what we thought would work and what we thought wouldn't work. We wrote down our daily observations and discovered that the lemon juice kept the apple the freshest and the vinegar made the apple go brown the fastest. Lastly. we designed our own poster to promote keeping apples fresh by using lemon juice.
