Superintendent's Report
January 27, 2020
From the Desk of Dr. Steve Yanni...
Lunar New Year - We wish everyone a Happy Lunar New Year! Lunar New Year, January 25, 2020, started the Year of the Rat.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day - The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this annual day of commemoration, the UN urges every member state to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism.
School Director Appreciation - January is School Director Appreciation Month. We thank our Board of School Directors for their dedicated, volunteer service to Upper Dublin! In addition to attending meetings, our School Directors spend countless hours each month preparing for conversations and votes at meetings, attending District events, and engaging the community. The support that our School Directors provide for our students and staff is valued and appreciated! There is a certificate of appreciation at the seat of each Board member.
MLK Day of Service - Last week hundreds of students, their families, and District staff participated in the MLK Day of Services. We appreciate everyone's willingness to engage in service projects on this day, and we sincerely hope that everyone's efforts have benefited those in our surrounding communities.
Harlem Wizards - On Saturday evening the Harlem Wizards took to the basketball court here at Upper Dublin High School and met their challengers - UDHS staff! The game was played in front of a packed house, and a good time was had by all. Proceeds from the event benefit the Upper Dublin Education Association as well as the Upper Dublin Education Foundation. Many thanks to all who attended, volunteered, and/or sponsored the event.
Welcome Aboard - This evening we are asking the Board to approve the hire of Ms. Erin Schwenk as our new Supervisor of Special Education. Erin comes to us from the Pennsbury School District and brings with her years of experience and knowledge about special education instruction, compliance, and leadership. In her role, Erin will support the Sandy Run Middle School community.
Adolescent Sleepiness Task Force - The District continues moving forward with our study of adolescent sleepiness. The task force has met twice, and another meeting is scheduled to continue discussing this matter. Many districts are combating adolescent sleepiness by changing their secondary start times. We are being more comprehensive in our approach, and we will work with the task force to finish researching the issue with the goal of making recommendations to the Board this spring about how to combat adolescent sleepiness. Click here for more information about the work of the Adolescent Sleepiness Task Force.
Construction Progress - Progress continues at the Sandy Run Middle School site. Footers for the classroom wing of the building are being poured, and the site changes almost daily. Please stay tuned to our Building Our Future site to stay informed about the progress being made at the construction site.
Join Us for Upcoming Events - Please check out our District calendar.
