The Rocket Review
SOARing into Spring Break!
Dear Rocket Families,
If you are not yet returning to campus, please be patient with our teachers as we work through the hybrid schedule. We have never done school like this before, and we may need to make adjustments along the way.
NEXT STEPS:
Monday, April 5th: TK-2nd grade hybrid schedule begins. (starting today, BLANCO PARK CLOSES at 8:00am)
3rd- 5th grade teachers will return to campus this week and 3-5th grade teachers will spend the afternoons planning and preparing for both in person and distance learners. This means NO small group instruction in the afternoon.
Wednesday, April 7th: 5:00pm- 3rd-5th grade Reopening Presentation with Dr. Hodge
Monday, April 12: 3rd- 5th hybrid schedule begins.
Thank you for your continued partnership, support, and patience as we enter into this new phase of school together. Have a restful two weeks and I hope to see you in April!
With Rocket Pride,
Dr. Hodge

Email your photo or video to Eleanor Lipat-Chesler by Friday, April 30th at eleanorlipat@gmail.com. If your file is too large to send by email, please contact Eleanor for assistance.
Our Shared Learning: AAPI Hate in the United States
Amid the pandemic, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities continue to experience racism, violence and harassment. The attack in Atlanta is yet another reminder that we must continuously disrupt and address issues of hate and bias, which often find their way into schools.
Many Americans don’t realize the wide range represented by Asians geographically. Indians are considered Asians, as are people from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal but, so are Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Filipinos, Malaysians, Thais, Burmese, and Vietnamese. They are all distinct cultures.
The Eight murders in ATL took place in the context of increasing violence against our Asian community, and particularly older Asian Americans. Furthermore, those attacking the Asian population could not distinguish a Chinese person from a Thai or Korean person. It has also been noted that the language used to describe the coronavirus, which Donald Trump referred to as the China Virus and Kungflu, was not helpful.
In the U.S., Asians are both considered a model group, and doctors, lawyers, and engineers have been accused of taking jobs away from others. Their children have been charged with taking up spots in colleges and universities. Simultaneously, some are considered unable to speak English fluently, lacking an education, especially for those who work in nail salons and massage spas.
The U.S. has a history of racism, from the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), which banned an entire race from becoming citizens and repealed in 1943. Japanese who were American citizens were put in internment camps.
Between the violence towards Asians, the assaults on elderly Asians, businesses, name-calling that Asian students experience, and minimal conversation in the main-stream media for weeks, what message are we sending our friends and colleagues who are Asian? How can they feel safe?
- If you have colleagues, friends/ neighbors who are Asian, check on them, please. Ask them if they need to talk.
- Recognize that they may be traumatized and may not be ready to speak about it. Just because they don’t want to talk about it does not mean they are fine.
- If you hear anyone saying anything derogatory about Asians, please shut it down. It’s not teasing, it’s not funny, and it’s harmful.

CCUSD GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK
Green Spring Cleaning Tips!
Refresh and get a healthy home this Spring, with these few ideas:
1. Ventilate: Indoor air has more pollutants than most outside air. Our furniture, water, and cooking all put compounds in the air that we’re better off not breathing. Letting fresh air into your home will clear the air.
2. Clear the clutter: After you’ve packed away the cold- weather togs, look around to see if there are other areas of your home that are more cluttered than you might like. Maybe it’s toys or books messily shoved onto shelves, or a closet that’s become unusable because it’s so crammed with stuff. Think about donating things you no longer use!
3. Gather non-toxic cleaners: Many cleaning projects—floors, surfaces, and windows—can be handled with a simple solution of vinegar and water. Castile soap and baking soda help with most scrubbing projects. You can also look up recipes for homemade cleaners made from nontoxic ingredients.
4. Use reusable cloths and tools: You don’t need rolls of paper towels to do it. Most can be handled with rags made from old clothes. Use a mop with a washable pad rather than relying on throwaways. Save old toothbrushes for removing crud from cracks.
5. Prepare for critter invasions: When it warms up, unwanted house guests come into our homes searching for food. Be ready with some nontoxic pest control solutions. A first defense against insects is diatomaceous earth. A beautiful glass fruit fly trap can look like a decoration. Placing some cedar, lavender, dried lemon peels, or cinnamon sticks with your clothing can help make your
woolens less appealing to moths.
6. Involve the family: Nothing makes the task of a big cleaning project more daunting than having to go it alone, so get everyone to join in. Put on some music and turn the work into games!
Happy Green Spring Cleaning!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER: Parent Pointers
As students begin returning to campus following Spring Break, they may have anxious and worried feelings of uncertainty and separation. In order to help ease this transition the other Elementary School Counselors and I hosted two parent information sessions this past Wednesday. In our presentation we spoke of different tips and strategies on how to prepare your child for their return to campus as well as how to manage those feelings of anxiety if they arise. To access the session recordings, presentation slides, and a compiled list of resources, please use the links in the PDF below.
