Parent/Teacher Conferences will be virtual this term. Conferences will take place March 25, from 12:30 – 6:30pm. OPTIS will be open to parents/guardians on March 19, for scheduling either a video conference or a phone interview. Please ensure that you have provided the correct phone number for the device you wish to be contacted on at the scheduled time.

After our Pink Shirt Day, Ms. Breen’s Grade 7 ELA class learned about 15 year old T-shirt designer and social activist Chloe Ngakosso, creator of the T-Shirt company Afroqueens. Chloe’s designs focus on combating racism and empowering young people. Students were inspired by Ngaksso’s work, and designed their own t-shirt logos to share with the class!

We would like to recognize MDJH student Tanish Bhatt (9-10) for his participation in the Canadian Parents for French National Poetry Competition, O'Poésie. This was a national competition for French students of all levels. Tanish's poem competed with entries from approximately 400 students in Core French and French Immersion across the country (this is more than four times more entries than were received last year!). Tanish's poem, Je suis le Temps, imagines time personified, presenting the positive aspect through joyful moments we experience as well as negative feelings as we sometimes see time slip away. This is not easy to do in English, let alone French!

Course Selection is now available for students who will be attending Gonzaga in the 2021-2022 school year. All the information needed for course selection can be found by visiting Gonzaga’s web site.

Please make sure that you have submitted your course requests on line through your PowerSchool account by 3 pm on March 9.

Also, please complete your course selection sheet and return a parent/guardian signed copy via email to geraldinehoulihan@nlesd.ca by March 9.

Our spirit week theme days originally scheduled for February 22-26 will be rescheduled for a later time. Rather than have virtual theme days, we will wait until we are physically back in the building to have our theme days.

As part of our grade 9 leaving celebrations, we would like to show a slideshow of all of our grade 9 students. We will show a student's grade 9 school picture and another picture of them as a baby, a toddler or primary or elementary age. Last year marked the very first NL Virtual Science and Technology Fair. Plans for this year’s fair are underway, spearheaded by a subcommittee of the Eastern Newfoundland Science Fairs Council (ENSFC).

The volunteer members of the council organize the Husky Energy Eastern Newfoundland Science and Technology Fair every year. This fair, which usually takes place in St. John’s each spring often involves more than 100 students in grades 7 to 12 from schools on the Avalon Peninsula. The highlight of the Eastern Fair is the selection of students to attend the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF). Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 situation for the 2021 school year, the CWSF was cancelled again. This is still the reality for all regional fairs across Canada.

However, given the obvious lack of physical contact required for a virtual fair, organizers Yvonne Dawe, Heidi Kavanagh and Patrick Wells, all local high school science teachers with the NLESD (and MSSIC board members), have decided to continue with their plans for an online fair if students are still interested in participating in this format. MDJH students are encouraged to speak with their Science teachers if this is something they are interested in. A Google Classroom has been set up for more information.

UPDATE:

Students from grades 7 to 12 are eligible to compete. Single or 2-person projects are eligible. The Eastern NL fair which will include students from schools on the Avalon peninsula will take place on Friday, April 23, 2021. Registration for both fairs will open in early March and remain open for approximately 3 weeks. (More info on this to follow).
