Our World's Amazing Magnets
Laurie Freeman
The Basics
-Magnetism is a phenomenon by which materials assert an attractive or repulsive force on other materials.
What are magnets?
-A magnet is an object made of certain materials which create a magnetic field.
What are temporary magnets?
-Temporary magnets are those which act like a permanent magnet when they are within a strong magnetic force, but lose their magnetism when the force disappears. An example of this would be a paperclip.
What are permanent magnets?
-A magnet that retains its magnetic properties in the absence of an inducing field or current
What are electromagnets?
-A soft metal core made into a magnet by the passage of electric current through a coil surrounding.
What are superconductors?
-A material that can conduct electricity or transport electrons from one atom to another with no resistance.
Fun facts!
-Some magnetic objects must be inside a field.
-The worlds largest magnet is Earth.
-Opposites attract.
-Mercury, Neptune, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Earth are the only planets with magnetic fields.
the greeks discovered magnets!
Magnets are used in many of the things we use daily!
