Principal's Message
Dear Loma and CT Families-
My top 3 highlights:
the collaboration and communication between all the staff to support our students and each other during last week's power outage, road closures, etc.
cheering (semi-coaching) the 8th grade girls basketball team against Steindorf (15-14 victory). This team showed incredible sportsmanship and team spirit.
attending the student initiated lunch time clubs. We have some amazing student leaders at both Loma Prieta and CTE.
Huge thank you to Loma HSC for rain suit donation. It was greatly appreciated by the staff.
Absence Reminders
Please notify the school office if your child is sick. Please communicate to Julie or Lisa if your child has strep throat, lice, pink-eye, hand to mouth or covid. We are diligently working to notify parents in infected classes upon any identified case. The toughest part of this issue is not having parents communicate to our office staff to let us know that their child is infected or not letting us know that they did a lice treatment at home because they found cause to treat.
Thanks in advance for your support in ensuring our students and staff remain healthy.
Julie’s Email (for CT): j.bourque@loma.k12.ca.us
Lisa’s Email (for Loma): l.sullivan@loma.k12.ca.us

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Mountain Mama of 3 girls, Lisa Sullivan - previously our youth leader at Loma and CT - is now the secretary at Loma Prieta. She is enjoying her new role and her ability to still connect with the kids on a daily basis.
She is an active member of our community having been on the board at Building Blocks preschool, a volunteer for all campaigns supporting our schools, a producer for Theatre in the Mountains, and a coach for the CT girls basketball team.
In her spare time you’ll find her on the side of a volleyball court, softball field, soccer field, or basketball court cheering on her kids. She also loves to bake celebration cakes and enjoys playing her bass guitar.

SCHOOL BOARD
The Board of Education held its last meeting for 2022 on Wednesday, December 14. New officers were elected at the meeting. Please help me welcome our returning Board President, Erin Asheghian, new Vice-President Charlotte Boisvert-Khandelwa,l and trustees Ron Bourque, Denise Ramón Herrera, Nora Kim.
Click here for the information about our new members. Please join us for the board chats. Next board chart is Tuesday, February 7 at 8:30am in Classroom 21 (building in front of the gym)Congratulations! LOMA PRIETA ELEMENTARY is a 2023 California Distinguished School.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, just released the list of the 365 elementary schools in the state of California to be recognized as a 2023 California Distinguished School and Loma Prieta Elementary was on that list!!!!! The State uses specific criteria and data to select the schools. This year, the State used: 1) closing the achievement gap and 2) achieving exceptional student performance. Every other year, elementary schools are selected. On the other years, it is secondary schools.
It is an impressive honor and distinction for our students, staff (both certificated & classified), and parent community as it reflects the hard work and dedication everyone gives daily/hourly to ensure the success of our students.
Great job!! Here is the link from the State. You can also see the other elementary schools being recognized so you can see the "company" we are in.
Message From Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District
Open Enrollment: Los Gatos – Saratoga Union High School District
Each year, the Los Gatos – Saratoga Union High School District seeks to provide enrollment options for students who live within our attendance area, specifically through our open enrollment process. An Open enrollment, INTRA DISTRICT TRANSFER allows a student who resides within the attendance area of one of our district high schools the opportunity to apply for a transfer to the other high school.
You are receiving this email because you and your student reside within the LGSUHSD attendance area and may be considering applying for such a transfer.
PLEASE COMPLETE THE APPLICATION ONLY IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND A SCHOOL OTHER THAN YOUR SCHOOL OF RESIDENCE. For example, if, based on your home address, your child would normally attend LGHS in the fall of 2023 and you wish your child to attend LGHS, do NOT fill out the application. Only complete if you wish to apply for a transfer.
Registration at your home school is required prior to completing the transfer request. Please contact the school registrar at your home school to enroll your student online, provide any necessary proof of residency and to learn about special events and parent nights relevant to your student.
Los Gatos High: Terri Dewing at 408-354-2730, x-231
Saratoga High: Robert Wise at 408-867-3411, x-211
Applications can be submitted as follows:
An online application is available by clicking here and must be submitted by February 10, 2023 (no later than 4:00 p.m.).
This application can also be printed, completed and delivered via USPS to the LGSUHSD District office at 17421 Farley Road West by February 19, 2023 (no later than 4:00 p.m.). Applications delivered by email cannot be accepted.
Applications received outside of this window will not be accepted.
Only a limited number of spaces will be available. This number is based on school enrollment and available school capacity.
Should the number of applicants exceed the space available, a lottery will be held.
Students whose transfers are not approved through the lottery will be placed on a waiting list.
Cold and Flu Season
As you know the Cold and Flu season is upon us. Similar to our partner, LGHS, we are seeing an increase in respiratory illness across both schools. Please keep your student home if they are feeling ill, and rule out COVID with a home antigen test.
Over the winter break, our custodial team completed a deep sanitizing of all classrooms so we could have a "fresh start" last Monday, January 9.
Please help us stop the spread of germs by reminding your child to do the following:
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
Throw used tissues in the trash
If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hand
Immediately wash your hands after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
- Fever (greater than 100 degrees and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours)
- Vomiting (even once)
- Diarrhea
- Chills
- General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
- Frequently congested (wet) or croupy cough
Our custodians disinfect common touch points on a regular basis and ensure that there is soap and hand sanitizer in dispensers. Please also take the time to review this flu guide for parents from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”
The health and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. Thank you in advance for helping make this year at school as healthy as possible.

CTE Home and School News
Happy New Year CTE Parents! We hope you are all hanging in there with this crazy weather!
Don't forget that this Saturday is our first Goodwill Donation Drive of 2023. Clean out those closets, sheds, attics, and garages then bring your donations and e-waste to the CTE/Loma parking lot on Saturday, January 21st from 9am-2pm. For a full list of what is accepted or all dates through August 2023, please visit: https://www.ctehsc.org/fundraising/goodwill-truck
Skate Night is coming! Keep your eyes open for more news on this upcoming event in future Wednesday Newsletters.
Finally, we would like to remind our families that the CTE Home & School Club is run by a Board of CTE parent volunteer board members. We are currently looking for a Treasurer as our interim Treasurer is also our VP of Fundraising. Additionally, I will not have a CTE Student next year, so will no longer be eligible to serve on the board. Without having the President, Treasurer, and Secretary roles occupied, the HSC will not fulfill our basic requirements to operate next year. Please consider joining the CTE HSC board so that valuable Teacher Supply Grants and fun Student Activities/Dances can continue in the coming years. Please message president@ctehsc.org if you would like information about the various Board roles and how you can help the CTEHSC.
Thank you for your consideration,
Lila Jones and the rest of the 2022-23 Board

Summit Store Friday-Update
Parents and Students-
We will revisit the possibility of reopening the long standing tradition of Summit Store Fridays in January with store management.
As you are aware, students are NOT allowed to be at the Summit Store unsupervised (without a parent), especially on Fridays.
If your child is going to cross the bridge after school, you must submit a note to the school secretary. Lisa at Loma; Julie at CT
Please remind your child that they MUST cross using the bridge and not to run across Summit Road.
Short-Term Independent Study Reminder

BUSES
We encourage you to consider using our school buses to transport your child to and from school to reduce the campus traffic and increase our parking lot safety. Bus pass information is available in both school offices.
Peanut Free School District
We are a PEANUT FREE school district. Please do not send your child to school with peanuts or other peanut products including peanut butter.
We do have some classrooms with students who have life threatening allergies to other nuts. If your child has peers in their classroom with allergies to other nuts, your child’s teacher will inform you that your child’s classroom is a nut free space.
