August 22nd
Good evening, Kenwood Parents! This is Mrs. Clevenger with this week's update.
We finished our first complete week! Our students have really jumped right back into routine and have the schedule down pat. They are doing a wonderful job! We are reviewing some important rules during announcements each week. This week we reviewed these:
- No cell phones are allowed at school unless given permission for medical purposes. If you use one to communicate after school it shall remain in your backpack with the volume off. Cell phones being used in our building or on school grounds will be confiscated.
- No toys are allowed at school unless it’s a special day recognized by your teacher. If so, then toys should remain in your backpack until you get to your classroom.
- No water bottles or cups shall be on the desk while using computers. Place them on the floor if you are using your chromebook.
This week begins FastBridge and NWEA/MAP testing. We use this data along with prior testing and teacher input to determine students who need reading support services and extra intervention. This is our schedule for this week's testing in Reading:
- Monday-FastBridge eReading (one on one) Kindergarten & 1st Grade
- Tuesday
- NWEA/MAP-Grades 3rd, 4th, & 5th
- CBM Reading-2nd Grade (one on one)
- Wednesday
- NWEA/MAP-1st & 2nd Grade
- CBM Reading-3rd Grade (one on one)
- CBM Reading-4th & 5th Grade (students below 40%ile on NWEA/MAP only)
COLOR DAYS are here! We help our kindergartners learn and reinforce their colors by wearing a specific color for the next two weeks. The teachers will share class pictures and these can be seen on our weekly Smores newsletter beginning next week. Here are this week's colors:
- Monday-Yellow
- Tuesday-Pink
- Wednesday-Green
- Thursday-Orange
- Friday-Red
Honor Choir Auditions are tomorrow, August 23rd right after school from 3:30 - 4:15. Mr. Consbruck has informed students about this option. Students will come in one at a time and sing "My Country Tis of Thee". Mr. Consbruck will try and have students who are being picked up by parents go first so that parents don't have to wait. Students will be able to be picked up any time from 3:45 to 4:00. Results of honor choir auditions will be announced sometime in October. Any questions? Contact Mr. Consbruck jacconsbruck@kearneycats.com
RUN CLUB starts tomorrow morning for those who have their permission slips handed in. It is on the east side of our building and will only begin when all adult volunteers are available. It starts at 7:15 and ends at 7:35 AM. Students can still get permission slips from their teachers.
Safety is our number 1 priority! We have already practiced our "Secure" system by locking down our doors during Monday's incident. We go on as business as usual. Our teachers and staff did amazing as they remained calm and continued as normal. We practice our safety drills throughout the year. With that being said, we have already completed two fire drills. This Friday we will complete many drills such as lockdown, tornado, fire, and evacuation. During evacuation, we will walk to the Peterson Senior Activity Center. Please make sure your child is at our building so they can practice along with their peers and the rest of our school. *This is also "RED" day so it looks like great TEAMWORK!
Our Second Step focus of the week, Being Safe, ties right into our district's Mission Monday of being polite in the hallways by voices off, hands at your side, and eyes forward. One rule we have at our school is “Be Safe”. Safe actions keep everyone’s bodies from being hurt. When we act in safe ways, we keep our hands to ourselves and don’t use them to touch others in hurtful ways. When we use safe words, we make sure nobody’s feelings are hurt. Safe words are kind and respectful. This week, think about how you can act and speak in safe ways in the classroom, hallway, lunchroom, and out at recess.
That's all for announcements. Have a wonderful evening!

August 16th
We had two wonderful days here at Kenwood. Your children did a great job of remembering past procedures. Thank you for preparing them for school.
For those who are new to us, I send out a message every Sunday around 7 pm for upcoming events. If you don't want to listen to me on the phone, you can check out your email. It's the same information.
Our doors open at 7:35 AM. First through fifth grade students not eating breakfast will sit in the gym. Third, fourth and fifth grade will be dismissed to their classrooms at 7:50 AM. First and second grade will be dismissed at 8:00 AM. Kindergartners will wait in the media center and will be dismissed shortly before 8:00 AM.
A reminder, kindergarten students start full days on Monday. This means pick up will be more congested so please be patient. We are asking kindergarten parents to stay in their vehicles beginning Monday. Parents who pick up 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade "youngest or only" students, please pick up on the designated streets. The driveways are for kindergarten and first grade "youngest and only" students. Students always go to the youngest siblings pick up spot if they are getting picked up. After our first two days with a couple of issues, it has gotten better.
COLOR DAYS are here! We help our kindergartners learn and reinforce their colors by wearing a specific color for about two weeks. It is a fun school-wide event. Starting next Friday will be our first COLOR DAY. We will all wear BLUE on this day. Please join us in supporting our students if you have the specific color to wear.
If you'd like to purchase student accident insurance, you can click on this link or go to our Kenwood website if interested: Voluntary Accident Insurance
Thank you so much for trusting your children with us. We are determined to do everything we can to keep our students in school.

Second Step Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum
Each week we will focus school-wide on one lesson. Each theme will be posted in this newsletter. Please help us support our students' learning by reinforcing these same skills at home and during your travels.
Theme: Setting the Stage--WELCOMING
Here at Kenwood, we want everyone to feel welcome and that they belong. We know we’re welcome when people smile at us and greet us with friendly words. We know we belong when we’re included and invited to play at recess. We know we belong when we notice the ways we’re all the same and accept the ways we’re different. This week, take time to greet others with a smile and invite them to play.
