A Message from the Principal
Parents-
Even before I thank everyone for the phenomenal work done Friday night with our dance; I wish to take a moment to share responses I provided to several of you who had asked me questions about events last week in person on Friday night and by email over the weekend.
This same message is one I wish to share with you.
While I know that all of our hearts go out to the families of those involved with the tragic incident that happened in Florida, in many ways we all feel impacted whenever something like this takes place on anyone’s school grounds. I know it raises a sense of fear and anxiety that no one should have to deal with, especially as we look out at our most precious possession- our children.
When folks say they feel powerless when watching what took place in Florida, we must never forget that we do have a great deal of influence on our school community. In schools we have protocols and measures in place like our single entry door alert system and the Raptor visitor identification system that, with regular drills, help make us better at readiness in case an incident were ever to visit us.
As parents we read and hear many things that raise concerns. The appropriate thing to do is not create rumors to raise further levels of anxiety with others. It is to report these concerns to the appropriate authorities. Only through this proactive action can we stem events like those in Florida. An example of this reporting is when we contacted police to respond to our school in relation to a “noise” that was reported to us on Friday. In an abundance of caution, we researched with them about the source of this sudden noise and it was determined that while there is a hunt club where sound can travel from off in the distance, the timing of the noise was pinned down to the same time that the dumpster lid was closed. I spoke with staff after school to tell them that, regardless of what might create a noise, our job is always to remain vigilant and we thanked the staff who brought it to our attention. We also requested that they never stop reporting any concern in the future.
Thank you to those of you who have shared your thoughts and concerns with me.
Transitioning from that topic is difficult, but please know how we do persevere with so many positives in your children’s lives. An amazing example of that was on display Friday night at Grange Hall. Over two hundred fathers & daughters danced the night away at our annual Father/Daughter dance. I would like to thank everyone that volunteered their time and donations towards this special event for our students.
Looking ahead to this week, our students will be celebrating the 100th day of school on February 22 and participating in Digital Learning Day! We are also excited to "March Into Resource" month next week. Calendars will be coming home with students this week.
Our teachers and staff are ready to kick-off an amazing week for our students as we continue to focus on 'Every Kid, Every Day.'
With love,
Mrs. Jones

STEAM Update
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5, just completed their Toy Invention Project! Students were posed with the following challenge:
Toys R’ Us has hired their newest toy design employee - YOU! They’ve been racking their brains for the hottest new toy of the year. Can you help them invent a new toy that kids your age would love? You must design a prototype and create a commercial to advertise your product. Using Flipgrid, create a commercial that is 0:45 - 1:30 minutes. Your commercial must demonstrate how you interact with your toy, while also convincing the audience that they have to buy it.
You can see all of our commercials divided up by class on the link below. Thank you to all of our community members who have donated recyclable materials and craft supplies this year! We're able to do projects like this and so much more, thanks to your help.
February - Outreach Project
Hats & Mittens Collection
For
Richmond Friends of the Homeless
A GHES second grader, Gianna Carbonaro, asked if we could collect hats and mittens for the homeless. As she began planning this outreach project, we learned of a cool connection. Another GHES family (Lucy Hansen), runs the Richmond Friends of the Homeless. #GHESgivesback
A donation box has been placed outside of the main office. We are collecting both adults & children sizes. Thank you for supporting our student-driven outreach project.
