Alaska Read's Act K-3 Progression versus Non-progression
Letter from the Principal
February is a month that signifies many changes. Mr. Marmont (Alaskan Groundhog) predicts an early spring and we all look forward to more sun. This winter season has brought us some extreme weather with snow and ice. Thank you for your teamwork during dismissal. Here are just a few reminders about the icy roads:
- Please remember the posted speed limit is 5MPH
- Please use the designated crosswalks; it is slippery outside
- Children must enter the vehicle on the side closest to the sidewalk; the other side is actively moving traffic.
- Be mindful of buses entering the bus loop, do not block these entrances/exits. Busses pulling out need some clearance, do not park beyond the X while waiting in line for pick up
K-3 and the Alaska Reads Act and Parent Teacher Conferences
To opt-in for weekly reading activities, ext @asdreading to the number 81010.The Alaska Reads Act requires teachers to speak to parents regarding progression and non-progression (repeating a grade or being held back) during parent-teacher conferences if your child is in the well-below category for reading. Please do not be alarmed. We look forward to being a support for you. See ASD's video on progression and non-progression.
It's also time to tell ASD how you feel about Spring Hill. We take great pride in building relationships with our community and students. Our Family School Climate Survey will be available February 19.
Sincerely,
Lena Brower
Principal

Nurse's Notes
We have had a few scattered cases of head lice in the building during the months of November/December. There have not been multiple cases in any one class, but I wanted to send out some prevention information for our families.
Head Lice (or pediculosis) are annoying little insects that live and feed on the human scalp. They are small, tan-colored critters (about the size of a sesame seed). They may live for days or weeks depending on temperature and humidity. They deposit tiny, grey/white eggs, known as “nits” on the hair 3-4mm from the scalp. The nits need the warmth of the scalp for hatching. They cannot live for more than 48 hours away from the scalp as adult insects, and the eggs cannot hatch away from the warmth of the scalp.
Lice do not carry disease but are a nuisance. They are not a sign of uncleanliness; they love clean hair because it is easier to hold on to! Lice are transmitted by direct contact, head to head. They can crawl, but they do not fly or hop.
- Once discovered, child must stay home only until they have been treated.
- After treatment, please come back through Nurse Naomi’s office for a head check before heading to class.
- Which for signs/symptoms of head lice: excessive itching or scratching head especially behind the ears or at the nape of the neck.
- Continue to check head daily for at least 2-3 weeks after discovery.
- Removing nits EVERY day for 3 weeks is the most effective treatment & resolution.
Please call if you have any questions!

GIRLS ON THE RUN!🏃♀️
Registration is now open for our Spring Girls on the Run season, which begins Feb 26th- but we need your help! We are still looking for TWO more coaches to make our team a 'go' - Good news, you don't have to be a runner to coach (you don't even have to like running), you just have to believe in the mission of helping 3rd-6th grade girls be joyful, healthy and confident.
The ten week session begins Feb 26th (practice days will be Tues/Thurs), if you're interested in learning more about coaching one OR two days a week please reach out to Shaina Seidner at coaches@gotrsouthcentralak.org, or visit our website. Parents/guardians who coach and have a child on the team receive a free registration.
Did we mention- online registration is NOW OPEN at www.gotrsouthcentralak.org.
Forms will be going home this week for students to join us on this free field trip to Kincaid.
Idita-Read Begins February 5
Students can start reading for the Idita-read 2/5! Keep on reading to reach Nome! We will have an ice cream party on 3/7 for all finishers.
