Intentionality
Apple is all about intentionality. From the way they designed their amazing park to meet the needs of their community, to the way they design and market their products, they have a clear and focused intention. Did you know that the Apple iPhone box was designed with a vacuum seal to create anticipation as you open it and to close in exactly 4 seconds when you place the cover back on top of the box? Even their buildings and workspaces are designed to encourage accidental and purposeful collaboration between different working groups.
All of this makes me wonder how we are intentional in education.
- When we build classes, design new learning spaces, or consider programs or applications, are we intentional?
- Do we have a clear focus on what we want and how we want to achieve our goals?
- When we decide to start something new, continue something, or stop something, do we have a purpose?
- Are we using our data (qualitative and quantitative) to help us make meaningful decisions?
Take a look at the graphic below, which shares growing and declining skills needed in the workforce by 2022, from the World Economic Forum. Apple agrees that these skills are critical to their work. Did you know that 50% of Apple employees do not have a college degree? They hire based on skills, abilities and products, and they don't need to be linked to a certain degree. Notice "Emotional Intelligence" on the list of growing skills, which supports our SEL work done through TRAC and mindful leadership.
"Everyone should have the opportunity to create something that can change the world."
I loved seeing this quote shared during my learning experience. I hope that we can collaborate on intentional opportunities that provide our students the freedom and flexibility to create something that will make an impact.

* Andree and Julie S. - Thank you to Andree and Julie S. who covered for me (Amy) this week so I could be away to visit Apple for the learning experience. I appreciate how they honored the value of the learning and demonstrated teamwork to ensure other events were supported in my absence.

Know My Story/ Know Our Story -- 5 Facts about Us
Rachel Tomechak, Instructional Materials Tech.
1. My favorite thing to do is run, especially very early in the morning when the stars are out. For many years I competed in races until travel hockey came into our lives. In 2008, my photo was used on the Carlsbad 5000 race t-shirts that are given to all race participants. I’ve also found $137 and a lot of pennies while running. I like to say that running has made me “rich and famous.”
2. My husband Jason and I have been married for 22 years. We met when we were 19 at a bar in Tijuana and realized we grew up 6 miles from each other. We have two boys, Hayden (16) and Gage (13). Hayden has had a hockey stick in his hand since he started walking and plays travel hockey with the SD Jr. Gulls. Gage is my jack of all trades. He loves surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding and boxing.
3. I taught in Carlsbad for 15 years. My first class of kindergarteners are now in their 20s and I’m still in contact with several of the families. When Hayden broke his leg last year, I had one of the parents call and offer to bring him dinner. I have no idea how she still had my phone number! I still have my 1st class picture hanging on my pantry door and I think of those kids all the time.
4. My favorite place in the world is Hawaii. We go every year and it is my favorite family tradition. We usually go to Maui and Kauai and most of our time is spent in the water surfing, paddle boarding and swimming.
5. I am slightly obsessed with donuts. VG’s is my home away from home. I’ve been known to eat 3 in less than 10 minutes but that was when I was pregnant and eating for 2.
