Kindergarten
This week in Kindergarten we explored the theme "The Three Little Bears" and read the book by Paul Galdone! We had a great time piecing together information and putting together the order of the story. This is the first book of our fairy-tale series and we loved comparing this genre to informational text and non-fiction text.
We have begun adding, counting to 120 and understanding place value up to 100! Take time to ask us our facts and we can show you how quick we are our rapid recognition of our facts! Cheerios, goldfish and other small treats are yummy ways to practice with your child and keep them engaged!
We all had an excellent time researching and learning about our South American countries this past week too! Finally we raced to the finish with our recycled card board cars for our STEM activity!
First Grade
In Ms. Kelly’s class, we are learning about place value in preparation of double digit addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping. We are also making literary predictions as we read the story “Edward the Emu.” Our students are doing a fabulous job as they research cultures, places, and animals. What wonderful work, first graders!
Ms. Molnar’s class started a new science lesson on light and sound! We started with how scientists observe and what they use to observe this week! We are excited to see what comes next!
In Ms. DiNuzzo’s class we learned about Argentina for Hispanic Heritage Night! Student’s will celebrate their first montly AR party if they’ve met the school of 6 points this month.
Thank you to everyone who made it out for Hispanic Heritage Night!
Second Grade
This has been a very eventful week for our second-graders!
After completing a book study on Junie B. Jones Is Not a Crook, the students traveled to the Repertory Theatre to watch the play! We noticed many differences from the book, but we all agreed that Junie B. Jones stole the show!
Third Grade
Fourth Grade
Fifth Grade
In Ms. Zaremski’s ELA class, students worked hard learning their new Vocabulary words from “Fantastic Mr. Fox”. They are looking forward to starting their first project. The students are also learning how to use details to make an inference in a text. I am so proud of my students that achieved their AR Goal and will be able to celebrate their achievement at the AR Party on October 4th. Keep it up!
This week, 5th Grade also had a great Field Trip at the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Sanford!
Sixth Grade
Mrs. Bravo's Spanish class's are working very hard to meet the requirements, and most important, to work as a team to have their Piñatas ready for Hispanic Heritage Night. They will keep working today and probably tomorrow. Then, the Piñatas are going to be evaluated by teachers and staff, who are going to vote for the best one. Please see the images attached of what the classes are doing so far! Thanks to all those AWESOME parents who donated candy and materials to make this happen. They are having so much fun! 😊

One winner will be chosen from each grade level in K-5 to move on to the county's STEM fair. The winners will be able to showcase their display board on November 27th from 5-7 PM and at the county's STEM Fair on December 8th (Afternoon.)
Students in 3rd-5th are working in STEM class on the Exploravision project, a national STEM contest. Students in 6th grade are working on their projects for the County STEM Fair (Ying Expo.)
Teachers are not required to grade anything this year for STEM Fair. There will be weekly help online meetings for families.
Science Fair
OSS’s science fair is an excellent opportunity for our students to explore their favorite topic in science. It provides an avenue for student research, allow students to be actively engaged in their own learning, and to use their own creativity to solve a pressing problem in an imaginative way. A science fair builds a bridge between home and school - establishing bonds between students, parents, and teachers and inspires students to become life long learners.
All forms must be typed or filled out using blue ink. NO pencil!
Mr. Stampas is the adult sponsor. Stampas@orlandoscience.org, (407) 253-7304
Form 1B is signed by the student and the parent. Besides the start date of experimentation on form 1A (10/20/17), all other forms prior to experimentation will be dated in September.
Please click the link below for full science fair description!

Energy Whiz Competition
STEM Teams Are Forming!
Students from kindergarten to sixth grade are invited to join a STEM team. Teams will meet off campus and compete at between one to three competitions. There are eight teams to choose from! Students that are not on a competition team will have a better chance of making the team since we want to make sure that ALL students are able to compete in STEM competitions. Also, if a parent volunteers to be the coach, the student has a higher chance of being on a team.
The teams are: Mousetrap Car (K-6), Water Bottle Rockets (K-6), Egg Drop (K-6), Rube Goldberg (Energy Transfer Machine) (3-6), Junior Solar Spring (4-6), Critter Cottage (4-6), Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6), and Vex Robotics (6).
If you would like to sign up for a team, please sign up online: http://bit.ly/ossenergywhizteams. Signing up on the form does not mean you are on a team. You will be contacted if you were chosen for a team.
For more information on Energy Whiz, visit their website: www.energywhiz.com/energywhiz. Here is a video about the events: http://vimeo.com/fsec/ew. Here is where you sign up as a volunteer: www.fsec.ucf.edu/go/ewvolunteer.

The Adult Volunteer Registration is now up and running. We need your help! This is a big undertaking that will reap big rewards if we have the support from the parents to help us. There are two shifts plus an early set up. Please sign up for at least one of them, if not more, so that we can have every position covered. We will have an In Service meeting at the October 10th meeting so you know what is expected of you. If you can’t come to that meeting, we will get in touch with you and share what you missed. If you are volunteering to work at a club tent do not sign up on this link. This link is only if you are helping with the PVO. You must be OCPS Additions approved to volunteer for anything school related. Don’t forget to register with them ASAP. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0949a9aa23a6f94-2018

OSES invites K-6 parents and students to join us for Art Night on October 12th.
At this night families will be able to create their own amazing Ebru Art, Suminagashi and Zentangles. Please come and join us to HAVE FUN.
Marbling is the art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments
on a tray of oily water and the transforming this pattern to the paper. Marbling is very old and traditional Turkish art.
This technique makes you feel power of creativity by catching the mystery both conflicts and harmony of your own will power of water and paint. At the same time it provides you to live it by relaxing while you are taking a great pleasure with this event.
Suminagashi, much like Turkish art of Ebru, is a technique the Japanese use to explore the science of marbling. Zentangles takes us away from the unexpected and allows us to take a moment and relax creating beautiful tangles of art.
Important school Reminders
Orca's Core Values and character Education
Character Education has begun at OSES and we are having a great time learning our social skills at school and the students are learning how to use these tools successfully too! This year part of our Character Education curriculum we have introduced "Operation Impact" our goal is to share and show how our students are reaching out to the communities, families and other students to show their positive character traits.
Here are a few character traits:
- Kindness
- Empathy
- Trustworthy
- Reaching Out to Others
- Building Friendships
We want to see how your children are using their character traits outside of school and featuring them each week in our weekly newsletter!! This is a great way to spotlight your child's positive influence that they have in our community and school! We look forward to seeing your pictures and experiences.
Please send a few pictures and small description of your children's activity (encourage them to write it on their own too). Pictures must be handed in on Monday's in order to make it for the Friday newsletter. They can be sent in to your child's teacher or emailed to Mrs. Krygowski at katherine.krygowski@orlandoscience.org
We can't wait to see our wonderful students putting #Operation Impact to work in our community!!!
