Summer Slice Vol. I

LA Staff News

What role will we assume?

The climate of our city and nation is disheartening to say the least. While we are just kicking off summer, I DO hope you are disconnecting, recharging, reflecting, and relaxing. However, I can't stop thinking of what action WE will vow to take EVEN IF everything calms down. For the next generation that walks through our doors each day, I can't think of a better group of standup individuals that have the relationships and ability to help impact change in the youth who become our family each year. I keep thinking of the analogy of the ripple effect. We have a captive audience every day. A group of kids who love nothing more than to engage in banter around hard issues. What if as adults we could channel that for a positive impact? And as they leave us each day the ripple effect continues. I'm sure in some regards we will fail, but without failure and the lessons that come with it, there will be no progress. On the other hand I know we won't ultimately fail--because of the dedicated individuals we have at LA every day. Could we set the table to ignite change in the hearts of humankind?

On June 3 I think it's easy to say YES. When August hits and we get busy, tired, or overwhelmed, it's easy to drop. Think about it. Personally, I think we should do SOMETHING. If you are interested in making sure this happens (certainly doesn't mean you have all the answers), please let me know. I'd love to have a few people interested and willing to open the dialogue with students and staff at LA.

Big picture

Remember, practicing mindfulness for 12 minutes a day will rewire the brain in a positive way! Our KIDS need this, and let's be honest, it wouldn't hurt us either! I've used Calm.com to help myself fall asleep (and my kids); it's a great resource!! AND, I PAID for Headspace and really liked it, BUT you can get it for FREE!! If you go to https://www.headspace.com/educators you can get your account set up! Play around with this this summer and let me know what you think! Remember, we can't expect kids to use it if we don't use it ourselves. Seriously, I need to meet you if you can't find something valuable in there! ;)

I would be THRILLED to know our students accessed this DAILY! It would be great if we offered sessions on this in the AM every day or multiple times per day!
