60 years together!
September 18, 2022
I hope this finds you well and enjoying the long weekend. I have a few quick updates to share.
1. Our very informal playground meet-up is this afternoon for students in grades 3-5. Drop in and play as long as you like. Working for Kids, parents will also answer questions about our family programming.
2. No toys at school! We have had an uptick in students bringing toys to school, especially Poke-e-mon cards. If we find them, teachers will hold them for you until conferences unless you want to come and pick them up from the office. Thank you for your understanding.
3. Our Gilly Gran Prix fundraising packets went home on Friday. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and makes a difference for our school. Thank you for your support.
4. Our shoe fundraiser is also in full swing. Do you have gently worn shoes that you or your children no longer wear? Consider donating them to our shoe fundraiser. We are trying to collect 2,500 pairs of shoes that will be sent overseas to developing nations. It's a win-win for all!
Hope to see some of you today. Take care, Erin
Sending big love to one of our Kegonsa families
We are organizing a care basket for Jeoffrey and his family. We would love cards for him. Please reach out to me with questions about other ways you can help.
Most importantly, please send your love and healing thoughts. They need all they can get. - Erin
Gilly Gran Prix
Kegonsa Families! You should have received these VIP’s (Very Important Papers) in your Friday Folders today! Fundraising for Gilly’s Grand Prix, our largest fundraiser of the year, officially begins today! Our school-wide goal is to raise $12,000 to support our Kegonsa Community building activities!
We encourage your kiddos to raise money through the online portal by giving donors this link http://www.funrun101.com/kegonsa and asking them to search your child’s name (first name, last initial) so the money goes towards your child’s personal fundraising goals.

No toys at school
Please remind your students that toys are not allowed in the classroom. The only exception would be if their class has earned a gilly reward day and their choice is to bring a stuffed animal or toy from home. This includes Pokemon cards. Thank you for your help in keeping your student's personal belongings safe while at school.
What Do Kids Mean When They Say They’re Bored at School?
I've learned over the years that “boring” means something very different to each student, and I need to dig deeper. “Boring” is the tip of the iceberg—it’s what the student says on the surface, but the underlying reasons can be more complex.... Read more here
How is PBIS different from other behavioral programs?
PBIS teaches students expectations in a proactive manner instead of a reactive, punitive manner. Kegonsa staff teaches social and behavioral skills throughout the day in concert with academic core instruction. We understand that we cannot expect students to effectively follow the rules until we have effectively taught them how. We work hard to use consistent language and routines with students to assist in making smooth transitions and to model appropriate behavior. Some of the evidence-based practices we use include:
Consistently teach and refer to our school-wide expectations.
Provide students with more praise than correction.
Talk to students with respect using a positive voice tone.
Actively engage everyone in the class during instruction.
Use pre-correcting, prompting, and redirecting as we teach.
Look for the positive first and provide positive, immediate, frequent, and explicit feedback.
