Stone Bank School
Reaching Out ~ November 17, 2017
From Mrs. Davies:
It has been a busy fall here at Stone Bank! You may have heard we have a new face on our teaching staff! Please help me welcome, Mr. Josiah Jones. Mr. Jones was recently hired to be our 4th grade replacement teacher following Mrs. Witter's resignation. Mr. Jones is a recent graduate of UW-Whitewater. He completed his student teaching at Rolling Hills Elementary in Mukwonago in January of 2017. After his student teaching he was invited to remain on staff in a long-term substitute position until the end of the 16-17 school year. In August, he returned to Rolling Hills at the request of a 5th grade teacher who was going on maternity leave. Mr. Jones' time at Mukwonago prepared him to hit the ground running at Stone Bank. We are so pleased he is part of our learning community.
I can hardly believe Thanksgiving is next week! Many of you will begin your holiday shopping soon. If you are an Amazon shopper, please consider using Amazon Smile in support of Stone Bank's PTO. Here is a link with directions for using Amazon Smile https://smile.amazon.com/gp/chpf/about/ref=smi_se_rspo_laas_aas.
Our PTO is a group of amazing parents that work hard to support our teachers and students. In the next few weeks you will receive an invite for their major fundraiser. One of the purposes of this fundraiser will be to help us purchase books for our new "book room". Some of you may wonder why on earth we need more books!
Last school year we implemented a new reading program called Readers' Workshop. The workshop model is very different than the reading programs we adults experienced growing up. You probably remember having a reading "textbook". From within that "textbook" your teacher taught you the necessary strategies to become a proficient reader. The workshop model does not use textbooks. Instead the teachers teach reading strategies using real books, at each child's "just right" reading band. In order to provide the richest reading experience we need to have lots and lots of books! The book room will help us accomplish this. How is this different than our library? The book room will house multiple copies of specific books that are shelved by the genre (mystery, historical fiction, etc.), and by the reading level bands. Students will then be able to go to the book room to choose books at their "just right" reading level within their current genre of study. Book room books will generally be used in class as part of instruction.
Could we stock the book room without the PTO's help? Yes, however it would take us a couple of years to allocate the funds to supply enough books for all of our students. We are so thankful for the support our SBS families and PTO. Your support is greatly appreciated and allows us to provide a rich learning experience for your children. I hope to see you at some of the upcoming PTO events!
Have fantastic Thanksgiving!

Thank you
Thank you for supporting Bagels w/Buds in October. We sent $135 to Susan G Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
Thank you to the Stone Bank Staff and students for making our Veterans Day program a successful one this year. Theus Diorio, Abigail Krahe, Lily Puetzer, Braylon Reading, and Evan Riemenschneider for leading the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. And a special thanks to Lexi Baugh, Ashlyn Melton, Maiyah Travers for leading us in 'The Star Spangled Banner' and to Jack Rankin for performing 'God Bless the U.S.A.'. We were honored to hear about Captain Andrew Oury's experiences at The Air Force Academy, flight training and his service in Japan. We wish him well as he heads to Washington D.C. for his next assignment.
