OCTOBER 17, 2017

Tuesday, Oct. 10, was a great family evening at Jefferson School. Hundreds of students and their family members attended our Open House / Book Fair / Family Literacy Night. It was inspiring to see so many families coming together to tour Jefferson, learn more about how we teach literacy skills, purchase great books, and have some pizza. Our amazing PTO and Jefferson staff planned a fun evening for all. Thanks to everyone who made this night possible, and thanks to all the families who were able to attend. We love seeing our families in our school!

Wednesday, Oct. 11, brought more excitement around books to Jefferson School when Bess the Book Bus rolled into our parking lot. Thanks to a partnership with Capstone Publishing, our K-2nd grade students toured the bus, and every Jefferson student had an opportunity to choose one free book. Our third and fifth grade students also participated in a group drumming session (pictured here), thanks to Giving Tree Music. It was an exciting day all around that Jefferson students will likely remember for years to come. In case you missed it, KEYC did a story about our big day on the evening news. Check it out...

Operating Levy Referendum/School Board Election

Tuesday, November 7, 2017, is election day. If you would like to vote early, absentee voting is available at the District Office, 10 Civic Center Plaza, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Residents of Mankato Area Public Schools will vote on an Operating Levy and the election of three School Board members.

As a result of our Operating Levy expiring on June 30, 2018, our School Board has proposed to increase its referendum revenue authority. This proposed authorization would include an increase of $365 per pupil and would increase each year by the rate of inflation and be applicable for ten years beginning with taxes payable in 2018.

The most common question we hear is, “What will the money be used for?” The dollars go to people, programs and day-to-day operations. Here is a link to our Q & A article which will help answer that question. This is an exciting time for our growing school community. Funding will help us to continue our work and provide the resources we need for the education of each child, retaining and recruiting staff and our daily costs.

Please visit the District website under “quick links” where you will find more information about the operating levy, a tax impact calculator for your property, and candidate information.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact the District Office at 507-387-1868 or email

Jefferson students in PE last Friday had an opportunity to showcase their basketball skills for some visiting players from the Bethany Men's Basketball team. The Bethany players led students through many drills and games to hone their skills, and our students impressed with their energy and tireless work ethic. It was another fine example of Jefferson partnering with higher education in our community. Many thanks to Mrs. Henke for organizing this unique opportunity.

- Thanks to everyone who donated on "Heavenly Hats" Day! The Student Council raised $210.30 with this one day event. Yet another example of the generosity of our Jefferson families.

Please be advised: 2016-17 applications for free or reduced priced meals expired on October 16th, and students enrolled in these benefits will begin incurring regular-priced meal charges at that time. If you would like to renew those benefits or see if you qualify, please send in a 2017-18 application. It can be downloaded from, picked up at your child's school or mailed to you by the food service office (507-388-7442).
