Haymarket Happenings

October 2021

Big picture

Our Back to School Nights are quickly approaching in mid-October! Our entire staff is excited to share everything they have been doing to ensure continuous learning for all our students (teachers will be focusing on instruction and learning...safety questions can continue to come to us, Mr. Baldwin and Mrs. Mills).

To ensure the health and safety of our entire community, this event will utilize mitigation strategies:

  • One adult will be able to attend the in-person event
  • No children will be permitted to come
  • There will be a recording of the presentation by teachers sent to those who either a) can't come, or b) don't feel safe being in person
  • EVERYONE will need to wear a face covering

Thank you for understanding. Our classrooms are already tight with just kids in there and if we added two adults for every student, things would be very tight and not be following our mitigation strategies.

Here are the times for our Back to School Nights:

  • K-1st: Tuesday, October 12th at 6:00pm
  • 2nd-3rd: Wednesday, October 13th at 6:00pm
  • 4th-5th: Thursday, October 14th at 6:00pm
  • PreK and our Self-contained classes will work with parents on their times

Thank you for assisting us in making this important event safe and informative for everyone.

Lexia Reminders

Please remember to continue to get your child logged into Lexia. You can find this valuable resource in Clever. All students took an autoplacement test at some point (most last year) and are working within this adaptive program that meets the needs of our students. We saw great success with the program last year...if usage per week is met (usually around 40 min total for the week) then students are more likely to have a stronger literacy foundation!

If you have any questions, please check with your child's teacher!

H.O.T. (high order thinking) Questioning Chart

Over the course of the past couple years I have shared the valuable resource below. We highly encourage everyone to post this chart on your fridge so when you are talking with your child about his or her day, something they are reading, etc. that you can strive for Level 4 questions for yourself. We are transitioning to teaching our students towards asking more "HOT" questions themselves, so encourage them to use the chart too!

Health and Safety Webinar - Round #2

During the month of October we will be hosting another Health and Safety webinar focused on the protocols and procedures for ensuring the safety of all our students. This information will be the same as the previous months with a few changes that have been guided by the Health Department. Some topics that will be discussed are below:

  • mask guidelines
  • Close contacts defined
  • VDH algorithm
  • When students can come back after quarantine
  • Communication Process/Timeline (health and instructional practices)

Grading Regulation

Please make note of the regulation below regarding grading. This has been in place for a little while, but as we continue on the standards based grading journey this information is important. One especially important note...a child can meet the grade level expectation and standard and their grade may not be an S+ or an A (see charts below).
