The Watzke Weekly
Week 2
Walk to Read
This week, all 2nd grade students started Walk to Read. The students did a great job learning the routines of transitioning to a different classroom for their reading instruction.
Safety Drills
At school, student safety is our priority. This week, we practiced a lock down drill, a shelter-in-place drill, and a fire drill. We discussed the purpose of each of the drills and why we need to take different safety measures for each one.
STAR Testing
This week, 2nd graders took the STAR reading test. This is a computerized test that adjusts the difficulty of each child’s test by choosing each test question based on the child’s previous response. If the child answers a question correctly, the difficulty level of the next item is increased. If the child misses a question, the difficulty level is decreased. Teachers are given a detailed report on students' strengths and on areas that need extra practice. On average, it take most students 20-30 minutes to complete. Next Thursday, our class will be taking the STAR math test.
