STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Learning on the Farm!
Fernwood Deaf students, along with other Deaf students in the district, had a great time learning at Sahl's Father and Son Farm! Students put their map skills lessons into practice by following a map to navigate the corn maze and they had an agricultural lesson on how pumpkins grow. They learned that pumpkins start out as flowers and the importance of bees in the pollination process. I think their favorite part of the trip was using the water pumps to race rubber ducks.
STEM Challenge
Mrs. Latshaw's geometry class worked on a STEM challenge to design a food container that was recyclable and durable. The students combined their math knowledge of volume and surface area with their scientific knowledge of density to calculate dimensions, build prototypes, and test their designs.
Layers of the Earth - Scaling Activity
In Ms. Kupcinski's science class students did a STEM scaling activity. In this lesson the students gained an understanding of the layers of the Earth by building clay models. As a part of the STEM lesson the students described the layers of the Earth and compared their model of the Earth with what it represents. While using the engineering process the students were able to learn why engineers need to learn about the Earth's structure.
Trial of John Peter Zenger
Mrs. Yaffee's students had the chance to act out the Trial of John Peter Zenger. Zenger was accused of libel when he published articles that criticized Governor William Cosby. Zenger's lawyer, Andrew Hamilton, argued that Zenger’s statements were based on fact and, therefore could not be considered libel. Hamilton told the Jury, “By your verdict, you will have laid a noble foundation for securing ourselves, our descendents, and our neighbors, the liberty both of exposing and opposing tyrannical power by speaking and writing truth”. This landmark case helped establish Freedom of the Press and the idea that the press has the right to keep the public informed of the truth.
Drama Club - Once Upon a Mattress
The Fernwood Drama Club has been working on their upcoming production of Once Upon a Mattress, which they will perform on December 6th and 7th. At their Saturday rehearsals, they’ve been working on choreography with our parent volunteer/choreographer Janine Morano Teles.
Scavenger Hunt
Mr. Goodwin’s classes are working on multiplying and dividing fractions through a scavenger hunt activity.
Orchestra Rehearsal
Miss Wyatt's first full orchestra rehearsal with all grades (6th-8th) present. This year, the orchestra has DOUBLED in size from last year! We are so happy to have a thriving orchestra program. We also have a large number of returning and new students, all working together!
