HAL Happenings

Mrs. Ediger ~ March 2015

4th quarter update

As we enter the last few months of this school year, there are just a few updates that I'd like to share with you. WELCOME to any students who have been recently identified to receive HAL services! I would encourage you to take a look at my website, mrsediger.weebly.com, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

3rd grade students

I am looking forward to working with the 3rd grade students who have been identified to receive HAL services! We will be working on various thinking skills this quarter: convergent, divergent, visual, and evaluative thinking. These skills will be valuable as we move into 4th grade next year!

Genius Hour

What is Genius Hour?

Genius hour allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time in school (http://geniushour.com/)

During this last quarter of school, 4th-6th grade students will choose an area of interest to explore during their HAL class time. Emphasis will be on inquiry, sharing what we learn with others, finding connections to the real world, and learning how to stay on task while doing an independent study project. I can't wait to see where these projects take us!

We will begin these projects during the next few weeks. I would encourage you to talk to your child about possible topics and/or questions they might want to research for this project. We want to find great inquiry-based questions. We sometimes call these "thick" questions. If we can find the answer with a quick Google search, it's not a "thick" question! A great resource with examples of thick and thin questions can be found here.

Noetic Math Contest and WordMaster Challenge (optional competitions)

The Noetic Math Contest will be held during the week of April 7-10, and the WordMaster Challenge will be April 17-22. Students have received study materials for both of these competitions. Remember that it's always beneficial to spend time outside of our regular HAL class preparing for these competitions, as we have a limited amount of time to study during HAL.
