- BUCKLE UP: We've gotten many reports that our precious students may not be properly buckled in when getting dropped off and picked up from school. Current California Law States:
Children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear-facing car seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds OR is 40 or more inches tall. The child shall be secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat. (California Vehicle Code Section 27360.)
Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.
Children who are 8 years of age OR have reached 4’9” in height may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be secured by a safety belt. (California Vehicle Code Section 27363.)
Passengers who are 16 years of age and over are subject to California's Mandatory Seat Belt law.

- Dogs on Campus: We love our furry friends but please keep them off campus. If you are walking your children to school with your dogs, please say your good-byes before you step on to campus. Not everyone loves dogs and it can be scary for some. We appreciate you keeping your four-legged babies off of school grounds. Thank you!
School News
- Say farewell to Pokemon at school: Unfortunately, Pokemon cards have become a disruption at school and will have to remain at home. Please be sure you check in with your child's backpack to make sure Pokemon cards and any other toys are left at home.
- EMERGENCY CARDS NEEDED ASAP: Several of our families have not yet logged on to the parent portal to complete and update their child's emergency card for this school year. This is vital information that we need to keep your child safe here at school. The online portal will be open until September 30th for completion. Please help us out by taking the time to complete the process.
- Did you know our Student Handbook has been updated? You can find it on our website here: http://ccces.wpusd.org/Parents/Student-Handbook/index.html
- Choir began week for grades 3-5 on 9/10/18. Choir meets every Monday from 1:50-2:50
- Please remember that supervision for students begins at 7:45am. There is no supervision for students prior to that. Please plan your mornings accordingly, we want our students to be safe!

Parking & Drop Off
Please note that parking is at a premium, particularly now that we have so many new families who joined us this fall. If you are arriving early and waiting with your child in your car, please consider parking along the street to ensure our staff can find parking when they arrive.
Entering Campus
If you are walking your child onto campus and plan to go past the big, black gate, you must sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor badge to be on campus. Remember to sign out when you leave as well. This helps us to account for everyone that is on campus.

MUSIC NEWSLETTER
September, 2018
Welcome to a new school year! We are glad to be back making music with our wonderful Carlin C. Coppin students. This year, we have three music teachers at Coppin: Mrs. Guemmer, Ms. Harp, and Ms. Van Hoy.
What’s going on in the music room? Our patriotic song of the month is Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa, and our composer of the month is Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). Some classes have enjoyed seeing clips of “America” from West Side Story, one of Bernstein’s most famous musicals.
CHOIR is for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and started on Monday, September 10th. We still have a few open spaces, so if you have a singer for a students, please encourage them to join us from 1:50-2:50 each Monday in the music room. We have many performances and activities this year. A permission slip (attached) is required to join, and students must commit to be an enthusiastic member all year. For more information, contact Mrs. Guemmer at jguemmer@wpusd.org.
BAND is for 4th and 5th grade and starts Wednesday, September 12th at First Street School. For more information, please contact Mr. Medina at amedina@wpusd.org.
1st & 2nd Grade: Our youngest grades have started out the year learning many songs, including the Hello song, Tisket a Tasket, Looby Loo, Oats Peas Beans, Sing With Me, and I Got the Beat. They will continue to learn/review classroom procedures, as well as concepts such as keeping the beat, dynamics (loud/soft), and basic rhythms.
3rd Grade: The third graders are reviewing many of their old songs and games from the last couple of years. They are also learning some new ones, such as Puncinella and Rocky Mountain. They are preparing to learn more advanced rhythm and pitch skills.
4th Grade: Our fourth graders are also reviewing old songs, games and procedures. Mrs. Middleton’s and Radtke’s class is singing rounds, such as Make New Friends, and getting ready to begin a unit called “Mallet Madness.” They will be learning to play more advanced percussion instruments for this unit.
5th Grade: In addition to reviewing old songs and games, the fifth graders are starting a ukulele unit in September! They have been preparing to play and have been learning about the history and parts of the instrument. Our wonderful volunteers from Ukes for Schools will be coming into our classes to help tune the ukuleles and assist with instruction. The ukulele is a versatile and relatively easy string instrument to learn, and our district has adopted it as a part of our music curriculum. Please contact Mrs. Guemmer or Ms. Harp if you have any questions about our study of the ukulele!
